I first want to ask the moderator to NOT move this to the products and accessories page. Second, I am NOT looking to start ANY wars. I am NEW to a Third Gen truck and a bit nieve as to what works and what doesn't. That being said... .....

I am looking into an exhaust brake for my new '07, 5. 9, G56 truck. It seems that the LATE third gen trucks don't have a vacuum pump... Right??

My friend that has an '02, NV5600 truck has a vacuum actuated, turbo mounted Pac-brake. He has stated that the further back mounted, inline brakes are a better set-up. I looked online at the U. S. GEAR D-Celerator and it looks to be a simple system that uses an electric actuator as opposed to mounting an on-board compressor, tank, hoses, ect.

Does anyone out there use one of these type?

Is the down stream type better that the turbo mounted?

PacBrake uses an electric air compressor and compressed air to run their exhaust brake... . later if you wish you can add air horns, or air bags to this air circuit and the compressor will support all three... . The pacbrake will tie into your ECM with a 2 pin connector... . and at the correct time the exhaust brake will interface very smoothly with your truck...

PacBrakes kit is C44045 which you can view on Pacbrake Exhaust and Engine brakes You can view their information and installation manual on line... . Its a very straight forward kit. .

I suggest that an electric actuator down by the turbo and the heat generated from the turbo would damage an electrical unit after a short time.....

A direct mount exhaust gives you the best performance for 2 reasons... there is a lot less pipe to fill up when the brake comes on... . that means faster action... . and if you have to modify the pipe down stream its suggested that you weld the adapters to the exhaust so there are no leaks with 60 psi of back pressure... . We install both, the direct mounts on most of the dodges and other pickups and the in line brakes on motorhomes, and mid range trucks where there is not a direct mount available... . I suggest that your friend really doesn't understand exhaust brakes... ...

I think you'll find that I've supplied a lot of the TDR guys their brake... if you would like a quote email me... . we have a great program...

I yad one of the US Gear units on my 91 7. 3l Ford and it didn't work aywhere near as well as my current Pac. Plus the mechanism got clogged with mud all the time.
 
I think the reason some go with a downstream mounted brake is exactly as mentioned earlier, when there is no direct turbo mounted brake availible. I think guys who run twins may have to go this route. I agree that as close to the turbo as possible is the way to go.



I have had two trucks with the Mopar Jake, one auto and now a manual. They work great, but I read about quite a few failed vac pumps, though I have never had one fail. I also think that the Pac Brake is the best outfit out there. Why don't I have one? Well the auto truck was new, the mopar brake had a factory 3/36 warranty, and it was my first one. The second truck already had the brke installed when I bought it used. I like the Pac design because of the compressor instead of vac pump. I think they simply have a more versitile design that allows more braking power than the others too. From what I have read, the Pac is the one to get, jelag isn't just trying to sell you, I think that is a very honest assesment.
 
All 03 and newer Dodg/Cummins do not have a vacuum pump on the engine from the factory like the older ones did. The Mopar/Jacobs model adds a belt driven vacuum pump and the brake mounts directly onto the turbo. The off on swithc is mounted ( finally ) on the gear shifter. Shadrach
 
I have the US Gear super duty de-cellerater on my 04. 5 and it works great.

I haven't had any problems with it from heat,mud ,or anything else.

Very happy with it.
 
I have the jacobs brake on my 03 . It does a verry good job!!!put it on in Cottonwood AZ. I would not be with out it. I live in IN. We go out to AZ. TX. NW. CAL. for the winter. MT fithwheel weight is 15. 000lb. by its self . The jacobs brake does a top job in holding all that weight back on 5-6% drops down the mountins. I would say by a jacobs brake to any DODGE owner. I have a standred 6 speed in my 3500 high out put. BY jacobs it was tested on the dodge and cummins eng!!

I feel the same way, I have the D'Celerator on both my '93 and '06... .

Good information Blackbear. Jake Brake is my first choose. Do you think I will need the Jake Brake for a 10,000 lb 5th wheel? We travel the Rocky Mountains in the US and Canada.
