Wood Stove Pipe Question!

I have always wanted a single action cowboy gun/revolver to add to my collection. Has anybody owned or shot a Uberti 1873 in . 45 colt. I went out to look at the Gaucho by Taurus and I held the Uberti. It really felt good. I have narrowed my revolver selection down to 3 choices

1. Ruger Blackhawk in . 357mag, (almost $500 in my area)

2. Taurus Gaucho in . 357mag, (almost $500 in my area)

3. Uberti Cattleman in . 45 colt, ($399 MSRP)

Also, are the magnum frames(. 357 & . 44) more expensive?

You are talking a big difference in design between the Ruger Blackhawk vs the Uberti Cattleman and Taurus Gaucho.

Ruger Single Action*Revolvers

Uberti Single-Action 1873 Cattleman

Taurus’ New Gaucho Single Action . 45 Colt Revolver

Personally, I would opt for the Ruger, in any configuration or caliber of choice. #1. Its American Made! #2. They have been around a long time and their products are very rugged! #3. Coil Springs in the Ruger vs flat springs in the others. GregH

The new Ruger Vacaro is their new entry into the area of Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) It's closer to the feel of a Colt.

Uberti from what I'm told can use Colt parts they are that close to the orginal. I've played with these a very little bit I had the trigger done up on it and when you cock the hammer it clicks 4 times. It's a COLT thing when you cock the hammer it spells it's name.

Nothing feels or balances like a Colt. Or so the saying goes with the CAS people.

I wouldn't spend any money on any model Taurus, Ive seen too much junk to bother with any of them.

I agree with Gharman The Ruger is made in USA so I'd give it all the chances to be the one I wanted.

I'm big on trying to keep my money in the states right now.

Thanks for the replies. I have been on all three company web sites extensively and have held and looked over all three guns at local gun shops. I agree the Ruger is the highest quality but when the price difference is in the three figure range, it makes buyers really sort out what he or she is after. I like the fact that you can get a CAS pistol in . 357mag because you have the option of using the very inexpensive . 38 round. On the other hand . 45lc is the classic and fits with the gun belts other CAS stuff such as lever action riffles. I will finish by saying after doing the pros and cons of all three makers it may fall down to price..... and have non-american (taurus or uberti) win. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Just a thought! The Ruger Blackhawk can be had with . 45 LC AND . 45 ACP cylinders! This does add to the cost. However, you will still be shooting a Ruger while you will be rebuilding those colt copys. I have a 2nd Model SAA Colt(since 1970) and even that unit I have had to replace the springs. If you hand load, the cost of ammo evens out. Up front cost may be an issue but you will pay more than the difference to get a Gunsmith to rebuild your Uberti's and Taurus's after a few years of CAS! I have the Vaquero it is a very nice and is a good shooter it is a 6 or 7 in jest how you measure it. a 44 mag.

Another vote for Ruger. I have a Blackhawk . 357/9mm and a Single Six in . 22/. 22 mag and love them both. They have shot their fair share of rounds and they still are tight and smooth as silk.

Had a little rust on one of the . 22 cylinders a few years ago (MY storage issue)... sent them back and Ruger re-blued them free of charge.

EDIT: Yes I have a seperate cylinder for the 9 mm and a seperate cylinder for the . 22 mag

I know I know..... :confused::rolleyes::confused:

As much as I(and my wife) would like to save the $150. 00 or so on the purchase of a new pistol, I can't get the American made(ruger) out of my head. I shot a Blackhawk that a friend owned and that was what got me wanting one.

Is the . 357mag more expensive than the . 45lc. ?? Is this because of the mag frame work?? The web says they are the same $, but local stores are different.

JLEONARD; I thought the single action was . 357mag and . 38. You said you shoot . 357mag and 9mm????

thanks guys...

It really depends on the Store! The . 45LC and the . 357 Blackhawk are the same frame. The Super Blackhawk is the Magnum Frame! The Vaquero is another animal! They used a larger frame on the 1st model and the new model has a frame that is supposed to make it more like a cowboy colt. These revolvers are all made from superior materials. The SAA Colt was originally designed for Black Powder and the subsequent models were not significantly improved other than manufacturing techniques.

A sporting goods store will set prices based on the demand, not on an equal frame basis. I dont know where you are located. Here in the Denver Metro area are a bunch of Gunshops that have as wide a variety of prices. Shopping around is the best chance of finding what you want. A used piece is just as good as a new one, if it was taken care of. Waiting and saving for what you really want is a worth while discipline to cultivate. GregH

PS, You can shoot . 38 special in a . 357 magnum cylinder. A 9 MM requires a seperate cylinder so the case can headspace properly in its specific chamber. GregH
