Out of nowhere and sometimes boots ... sometimes no. When "boots" And can get up to windows the next keystroke generates the blue screen. Sometime the HDD just will not respond on startup. I swapped drives and the same thing happens. So I can rule out the drive. Any Ideas??

smwdm. sys - related to sound cards. If the error is always in this driver, it's a good clue; if you have a plug-in sound card, unplug it and try rebooting. You can also try reseating all pluggable chips and cards - rock/wiggle the chips and unplug/re-insert the cards. Keep yourself grounded to avoid static!. The sound card or MB might have gone south. Another possibility is heat; built-up dust can reduce heat removal, as can a failed CPU or system fan. Over-clocking is another possible source of problems. Less likely is a power supply on the verge of failing; usually, they simply fail, but if it is marginal voltage, it might cause problems.

Have you recently installed any drivers (I am looking at Microsoft Windows Updates). If so, try a rolling back to a previous System Restore Point:

Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore

If you have not installed new hardware/drivers/software then fest3er is on track checking for heat issues next. I find dead fans all the time, dust clogged heatsinks are also common reasons for the CPU to overheat and that can cause all sorts of weird errors. I have seen a memory stick give up the ghost and cause these sorts of issues, you don't get the BSD until something tries to load into the bad register and boom everything dies.

My dell would repeatedly do that and the tech support (which makes you stay on hold forever!) tried to tell me that it was a hard drive problem and then it was a software problem but it was a memory problem. If you have more than one memory chip try booting with just one at a time and see if the problem goes away. That is how I found the problem. Had a terrible time convincing the dell tech in India of it tho.

Well the fans (P IIII) cycle on when they should but for some reason It is throwing some majorly hot air out the sync side. The reason it's funny is when I just checked it out (Failled boot of course :rolleyes: ) it went hot in under a minute when it usually takes some good time with the use of a very strong program. Also I flipped it over the other nite and had installed a new HDD. I Also tightened every screw under it and popped open the memory door. Of course There is an empty simm socket so I make sure that the arms are not touching anything important. When I made contact with the motherboard putting it back together ... IT BOOTED THIS TIME Oo. and that is when I was able to get a pic of the screen :{

The thing that urks my arse about this is that it is an HP Pavilion zx5180

3. 0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor

80 GB hard drive

512 MB DDR SDRAM

54g integrated 802. 11 b/g wireless LAN

But that is not the urking factr here. IT LASTED 372 DAYS :{ As per everything help center in India now #ad
"Youuu arre out of de warrantee my friend" #@$%! So I did the usual Call irate as hell to the AMERICAN headquarters to complain about my "American" Laptop "Made" in Japan Kinda thing and they were sypathettic about my dealings. and geave me a discount on repair yaddah blah blah swell :rolleyes:

So I am trying to narrow this one down and being I have the blue screen red handed :-laf I figured I had something to go on. Of course I want to fix it but not for big $$'s (Like Duh)

I also had the same problem with a dell. The problem got worse after each blue screen. Seemed to create other problems within the computer. Replaced ram and all was well.

Psst Hohn ... . find SOLO :-laf

Well it's at the Geek ~N~ Squeek joint (Or PCW) whatever ya want to call it place which I know to be very good. It seems to be from preliminary tests to be a cooked muddah Broad. #@$%! :rolleyes: However They need to get a stable boot from the last good known config to verify. They (Pailion ZX series) have had known issues with a certain area right near the simm socket to fail from heat stress. Airflow from the dual fans drawing past this area from what he described creates a void and that area suffers the greatest.

I will update y'all with their findings.
