For about 2 years I've had an erratic idle speed problem. The engine would idle about 50 RPM above normal for no apparent reason. I had 2 dealers look at it. Of course when I took it to the dealers, the idle speed was normal.

Then one day it was acting up when I was in town and I had one of the dealer's Diesel guys look at it. He putzed around a bit and tried to tell me :

1) It was the AC compressor cycling off and on, even though I didn't hear the compressor's clutch engaging. This told me all I needed to know about this guy.

I know what the idle sounds like when the compressor engages. The speed remains the same. The idle sound is throatier as the PCM tells the FPCM to increase the fueling rate to maintain the idle speed.

2) It was the fuel filter fuel heater element cycling off and on. It was above 50* that day.

Since there weren't any codes for a problem, nobody could decide what the problem was. Nobody knew for sure what all of the inputs were that control the idle speed either.

Anyways, when the idle speed was higher, I didn't have any torque when I would disengage the clutch to start rolling. 2nd gear starts would kill the engine. The symptoms were similar to this:

I got a check engine light a couple of days ago. You guessed it. Its the APPS (TPS). The dealer will replace it for my deductable fee under my extended warranty.

Yeah, Yeah, I know what you guys think of the extended warranty. Here is a look at my warranty repairs. After Lee Iacoca's successor dumped $1,200 into my X-fer case rear extension and vacuum pump at 32,847 miles, I decided the warranty extension was cheaper than buying a new truck.

My warranty repairs:

@814 miles -Replace Power Steering Pump (bad shaft seal)

814 -Replace Vaccuum Pump (bad shaft seal)

3,367 -Replace Steering Gear Box (bad output shaft seal)

6,808 -Replace Steering Gear Box (bad output shaft seal)

14,625 -Recall 788, Low Pressure Fuel Line

14,625 -Recall 799, NOx reflash (I took it in for the fuel line fix, and it was reflashed with the "Latest Software Edition TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE").

15,265 -Replace rear Pinion Seal

18,911 -Replace Vacuum Pump(bad shaft seal)

23,154 -TSB reflash Cruise

27,300 -Replace X-fer Case Rear Output Seal

31,734 -Replace X-fer Case Rear Output Seal

32,847 -Replace Vacuum Pump (bad shaft seal) This fixed the surging Cruise.

32,847 -Replace X-fer Case Rear Output Seal, Extension, Bushing, & Driveshaft Yoke

46,194 -The compulsory Lift Pump replacement. DC was charged $329, just for the pump! The total for the job was $457. 90, under warranty, of course.

So, we'll see how the new APPS works out.

Thats quite a list, I was expecting the same thing, 'cause my truck was built on a Friday. However, it wasn't the case, other than the lift-pump, it hasn't been back for engine/drivetrain repairs. I've had a few interior item's go south tho, both window regulators, both power lock switches, clock-spring, and a broken mirror( yes, they warrented a broken mirror glass) all under 10,000 miles. The truck has 62,000 miles now, and is without issues, I'm feelin' rather lucky, and I love my truck! Sorry about your luck. :(

Later, Rob
