Dropped the front U-joint out of the yoke again. Where can I fix this so it lasts more than a month? New style yoke or something. Clips keep falling out and then the caps fall off. Then the shaft hits me in the butt so to speak. I want to go beefier!!

Drive Train Industries, in Denver said they could replace the yoke with any size I required, (larger than stock) They just needed the entire assembly, including the yoke section off the pinion. GregH

Oh c'mon Tim! You haven't even had enough snow to plow yet up there! :-laf

Did the caps come out of the shaft end, or the diff? Sounds like the shaft, the way you're talking. Did you get that shaft at Fleetpride? I can't remember. Maybe call them and see what they can do for you, it hasn't been in that long.

I wonder if you have enough lift that the yokes are hitting the clips and knocking them out?

Caps pop out of the straps. The little teeny tiny bolts and sometimes the strap get all mangled and torque twisted. I take this drive shaft out for summer driving. It's only in when the plow is on. Tires are 315/70-17 BF Goodrich AT's Ion Rims. My wife's Van has a beefier strap and bolt then my CTD. :{ We all know what these trucks can do. That engineer should of been working on the plastic for the dash or something else like that not U-Joints. Underdesigned for sure. It was like Late February when I got the last shaft from Fleetpride the double joint shattered (Trunion) unrepairable. I mostly slip the caps now because we changed them all last year fronts and back and then the whole shaft on the front. I don't want to waste that kind of time. When I can go bigger somehow. If we have to buy a Mill and machine our own. By the way found one of the caps with all the needle bearings in place. Sometimes we just put em back on and go plow some more. The kids did trick or treat in 4" of Snow here and it's been snowing ever since. No kidding. There was over 3 feet in Turin before Thanksgiving. Sick man. I got banks as high as my hood and its high I need a step ladder to check my oil. :-laf

What year truck?

89-92 are small a 7260 (Similar to a 1310). 93 is larger yoke and joint a 7290(?)Similar to a 1330.

I had a custom shaft made for a 1410. :)

IIRC, there should be a small tab on the yoke to hold the caps in. The clips shouldn't matter on the diff end. If it was the shaft end, then you need them.

I know about the snow. I sit down here and look at the radar weather and thank my stars that I don't live up there. ;)

:-laf :-laf

I'm working on the truck right now. Fresh oil and filter. Looks like I should get a new yoke. This one is not flat at the mating surfaces anymore. I'm going to take a few pics. Nice straps, eh?:-laf The surfaces for the u-joint straps are just as mangled as the straps. I don't think filing them would make them true just flat. Things are definately not rotating in a tight motion but with a lot of untrue rotation. Here's a shot with no straps just the drive shaft in the yoke, minus 1 cap, to give you an idea of the extreme drive shaft angle. 99% of the problem.

I went with a 1350 in the front and replaced the yoke with one that takes u-bolts instead of the whimpy straps. Well worth it and I have no issues. I am running 4" front lift and I wheel with the sway bar disconnected and have no clearance problems.

If nothing else, get a yoke that takes u-bolts.

That ujoint angle doesn't look that bad to me. The question I ask is how do you know if it is still in phase? If it's out of phase that will really load the bearings. ;)

By phase I mean the angle from the bearing centerline you show in the picture to the bearing centerline of the ujoint out of view.

I worked with/designed them for steering shafts for 30 years. With the problems you are describing it sounds like a phasing problem to me... . yes accentuated by a higher than normal ujoint angle.

Well I don't know about the phase yet. But I managed to figure out which U-Joint I have it's not a 316 and it's not a 317 Napa and Federated sold me both. I put in a call to Fleetpride in Syracuse (thanks Pete) and after some searching we found out the shaft had a 347 on it. Now I'm smiling and plowing again. I talked about 1350 and 1410 with one of the guys and he said I had to call and ask for Scott. I'm calling Scott next week. Oo.

Tim, glad you got it back together. I figured those guys would help you out. They have a good rep in the area.

We got about a foot here since friday.

I'll see your foot and raise you another foot. :-laf Won't stop blowing today, keeps filling back in. Now it's snowing again with the Advisory until 7PM tonight. Oo.

Tim, turned out to be a foot last nite.

Now it'll freezing rain tonite and slick the driveway up all nice! :-laf
