Here I am

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Uh Oh!, Might change from 24v to 12v! Need advice.

I know most people go the other way, but I quit my high paying job in the big city to move back to the country, and a relatively low paying job. Right now I've got a 24v, but am thinking of trading it for an older 2nd Gen. 12v to get out from under the payments. This is such a generic question, but what year from 94-98 is the best. I want to bomb it to about 300 hp w/ out changing turbos or housings. I also don't want whatever model years have the cat converter. I wish I knew more so these questions wouldn't be so open ended. Thanks for all your comments in advance.

All the 94-98 trucks had cats. The best pump came on the 96-98 5-speeds (887 or 913) with variable timing. For 300hp, it really won't matter though. Add delivery valves to an old pump, cam plate and a set of injectors and you are there. Gauges/exhaust will be needed as well though.

If you get a 96 to 98 (5 speed) you can achieve over 300hp with a #10 cam plate and nothing else. If it is an auto you'll also need injectors as kieth said.

Garry.

Variable timing??? never heard of it on a 12 valve

'98s are probably the best but hard to find.

Found in Montana this morning the rarest of all-- '98 quad, 4x4, 5 speed, low miles, $17k. 406-883-4077 or 907-240-4473

I don't know this person or anything else about it

You will never miss the exta dozen valves. (and associated moving parts) If only we could electronically advance timing and turn off our mods with a switch like the 24v guys can.

Variable timing?

Some one confirm this for me. The p7100 does not have any internal mechanism to vary the fuel camshaft position relative to the drive gear. Am I correct?

Forget about the grind on top of the plunger and how it effects timing, I don't want to go there and that's not my question. thanks for responses!

98. 4 is the best year..... rare, and a 5 spd is even more rare, but that is the first year they made QC's. . I am almost if not over 400 RWHP, and still have more in the works!

94 model trucks with pre-January production dates were built without cats. Slightly less power than later models... but that can be remedied.

new exhaust will fix that kitty any day (so I've read here). IMO having the QC is worth looking for a '98. But if that has no importance, then finding a 97 or earlier will be easier to find.

If your anything like me, the simplistity of the 12v is comforting. Once you get into the computer stuff I'm lost. I hate wires.

I had a '97 then tried upgrading to a '01. You can see by my sig Im back to a 12V ;)

I did not like all that computer stuff, the motor is louder, worse fuel mileage, and cost alot more.

I'll stay with the 12 valve. its easier to bomb. its already out of warranty so I dont think about that. its quieter, fuel mileage is great and best of all... . no payments :D

Sounds like some smart guy should of bought 20-30 98QC's with the 12 valve engine and put them up on blocks. Looks like there is a market for them with some profit built in. Would any of you pay more than the old sticker price for a "new" 98QC 12 valve, if one was available? I'm talking 1998 sticker price.

The '98 12 valve is not really that rare as far as auto production goes. For people in the know on this board, it is a good find. But there are so many others out there that don't know or care about the difference, that their resale price will probably never be extrodinary compared to a '98 24 valve. It is almost never a winning proposition to buy a high production vehicle and pay overhead to insure and store it. My $02. If I was shopping, I would be interested in a "new" '98, but pay over original sticker without warranty support or knowing how well it was preserved, that would be tough.

The 12 valve engine, without electronics, will prove to be one of the most relaible long lived engines ever put in a non-comercial vehicle.

I paid more then I wanted to for my '98 12 valve that had been wrecked and partly fixed because it was close by and I just had to have the QC and a 12 valve engine with a "stupid" pump.

drees, that is one of the most right-on comments I've ever read on this site

If there is a choice between 96 and 97, the 97 has better power brake booster system. The 96 had vacum boost which was ok but the hydraulic boost is better. Other wise 96 or 97 there is no difference. The auto trans models give up 35 hp to the 5spd and 95 and older are less HP also.
