Damn getrag started making some nasty noises tonight on the way in from Utah. Sounds like a bearing or race issue, seems to be speed dependent... . noise does not change when i shift to neutral, just coasts down with speed of truck. How long does it have??:{

Damn Getrag

When I still had my Getrag in there were noises that came on gradually like you mention, I too was loaded most of the time. Seems like it went on for a couple of months gradually building up. Then dropped right out of gear going up one of the big ones just outside of Kingman and quit completely 17 miles east of Flagstaff. Ordered the complete change over kit for NV 4500 from Blumenthals in OK City and 48 hours later it was in the truck.

My '93 is pretty much my daily driver, the '03 is the work truck. Heaviest the '93 has seen in the almost 2 years I've had it is my 20' enclosed, and that was just to the local track. I was just in the truck yesterday when it started doing this, think I'll go by this one local shop... not the idiots at Driveline Service that screwed up the '03, someone else. How much did the Blumenthals kit run R. C. ?

Yep, she is parked. I ordered up a 4500 conversion from Blumenthals this afternon!Oo. Should be here by weeks end or next Monday, then I'll take the getrag core back to them... along with my spare 5600 for the '03 when I go to pick up a special order trailer back that way in 3 weeks! Guess almost 160k was not too bad for a g360, huh? Also, have a new South Bend clutch here too that will go in, depending on what the current one looks like. Need to preserve the breed here!!!

Comes out to around $2760 plus freight. Shop that will be handling the install... damned if I'll crawling around the driveway in 115* heat:-laf... said it will not be more then $650 for their part. then if the getrag goes back for a core you get like 415 back for it, initial core charge of 750 for a 4500. Way reasonable in my book! :)

WOW that is unbelievably cheap comparing to prices I would suspect around here (Ct).

That's roughly 10 manhours. Of course around here rust will significantly add to the required time.

Please let us know what the bill totals when it's all said and done.

Rust can shorten the time for a repair. Last work I tried to do on an Old Dodge, I couldn't find a brake or fuel line worth keeping, the gas tank was falling down and one spring mount was melted. Skipped the repair, junked the truck.

The good news is that projected salt prices are high enough that less might used.

But like everything there is always bad news on that front... that's a topic for a different thread

I see it as good... when the salt runs out maybe all the idiots who don't know how to drive in the snow will finally give up and stay home so I can still get to work on time during a snow storm.

Oh no, Matt! They won't stay home! :eek: They'll just drive too damn fast as usual and have a wreck in the road, making you later than ever. ;) :-laf

transmission change-over

When I did my change a few years back I saved $ 1200 compared to what the transmission rebuild shop in Phoenix was going to charge me to rebuild the one I had and saved 2 weeks in the process. If you are along I-40 shipping time was not bad at all but if they have to change trucks and go off like to Ogden mine took almost 2 weeks to arrive (trucking co screw-up) blumenthals ships the same day usually. I have had one occasion to test their warranty and it was great !

yeah yeah yeah!!!:-laf Got 'er back wednesday afternnon, what a difference over the getrag POS!!! Didn't have anytime to patch up old shifter hole before leaving for OKC to pick up a trailer and drop off core at Blumenthals. So I took the dually , hopefully cools offf a bit here later on today so I can fix the hole and hook up the tach again. Turns out someone before me mounted a tach pick up in the bellhousing to get a signal, I hope I can use the factory 4 way connector under the dash for it... . anyone remember which wire is for what on that?:confused: Been a bit. The 4500 shifts like butter, if only the 5600 in the '03 shifted 25% as good as this one. Blumenthals has 5600's coming out their ears back there, so I will probably try one of theirs if no one figures out how to get a real trans in a 3rd gen! we did have to redrill the trans mount and knock 5/8" off the rear shaft for some unknown reason, Alan at blumenthals has never seen the need for that before, so hopefully I will make a trip back that way so they can see why that was necessary!
