I'm posting this so what happened to me doesn't happen to anyone else. I changed my bypass and regular oil filter and got out a couple of extra quarts of Amsoil to make up for what was lost. Maybe I'm getting old, but something distracted me after I added the oil and I closed the hood without putting the bypass cap back on. I didn't realize it until I drove down to the local store for a minute and looked out and saw oil pouring out from under the engine.

Fortunately, I only drove a half mile or so, but in that distance two gallons of oil got pumped overboard. I'm also fortunate because I left the engine running -- something I rarely do -- which let me see the oil running out.

Don't say it can't happen because it can. In my case, my guardian angel was looking out after me. It sure could have been a lot worse. :-laf

Very close call, and I am glad to hear you have caught it in time. I am paranoid I will forget just the same one of these days. I double and triple check everything, but it still could happen.

I take the cap off and set it on the latch, that way if I forget the hood will not close. It might break the cap though.

Sounds like a close call. Been there got the t-shirt myself.

I imagine that it is similar to the turbo oil supply line being loose... ... ... ... ... .....

At least you could find your way home.

Ever notice that when you have one of those,"did I close that valve" or" did I tighten that bolt" moments, you go and re-check it only to find that you HAD tightened or closed it!!!... After spending almost 10 years rebuilding and working on $100,000+ engines, i've noticed that the bolt, part, piece, valve, cap, plug etc. . that never crosses your mind is the one that will come loose and wreak havoc!!!!...

Mr. Murphy strikes again.

Glad to hear you caught it in time, only thing worse than an engine "swarmin" on ya, is knowing that you're the reason it swarmed!.

I drove over 200 miles with the filler cap slid down on the intake side because of the same thing. Smell was what made me look. Shocking to see that cap not on! Luckily it was still on the top of the engine:p Oil was still at full... . and I was haulin that trip:eek:

A friend of mine was barreling down the freeway when he felt the Cummins start knocking. When he pulled over there was oil over under the hood. A hose clamp on his bypass filter came loose and emptied the entire oil pan. He wasn't as lucky as you, the
engine was toast. Guess you have a better guardian angel. Check those hose camps too.
