My stock trans has almost 200,000 on it and the only problem is that it jumps in and out of overdrive, but my motor is stock and I want to start bombing it. First things first I need a trans that can handle everything I throw at it, but I don't want to drop 6grand on one when I could build on myself and buy all the special tools that I need. My plan is to buy a used one and rebuild it. when I still have a useable one.

I have a 97

I want this tread to be the source for the home built trans

So here's a list of questions

1st where can you buy a manual that has all the info for tear down and rebuild

then I want people to give there opinion on the best parts/controllers

Need much more info

Stay with an automatic or go manual? Two or four wheel drive? If four, what t-case do you plan to use? If manual, how many gears do you want to stir?

If you are talking "automatic" , I'd look at "Allison", especially if you want OD. For 3-speeds with no OD, it is tough to beat a well-built GM TH400. Easy to work on and upgrade, too. Allison makes proven autos for heavy duty use, some of which bolt right up to Cummins motors in buses and such.

As a confidence booster.

Benjamin, My great mechanic friend has rebuilt 3 of these trannys at home in his small shop. He says they are simple when compared to others. If I remember correctly he said the Ranger transmission was his worst nightmare.

Just have an area surgically clean to start with and pay attention to the puzzle. I would recommend installing a store bought valve body. Spend a ton of time reading. Get it right the first time and you won't have to teat it back down.

I sure would like to watch someone go through a 47RE. A man or woman can do anything they want to do.

I found a great book on 727 Transmission. This is the same trans that is in our trucks with out the overdrive and locking tc.

Torqueflite A-727 Transmission How Rebuid Modify MANUAL

The best price on this book I found on Amazon.com
