Walking Dead. Season 3

Maine has a 4. something earthquake last night.

Uncle BIG got one in with his Lyman Great Plains 54 cal round ball. The Elk was a nice one but not spectacular as unk said. But the stalk was nothing short of fantastic. I was bringing a group of hunters back to town when we came across their animals tied up and nobody around. We dismounted and took a short walk and ran into my Grandfather,Aunt Penny and some of the other hunters that uncle BIG came up with. We sat and watched for what seemed like for ever. Then we would see a head pop up and take a look and then be gone again for ever then a head pop up and gone for ever this lasted for 45minutes. The Elk had no idea that uncle BIG was as close as he was, talking to uncle BIG he!!! didn't know that he was that close until the finial time he stood up out of the ferns and raised his rifle and shot the Elk in the head. He was 25 yards away. Uncle BIG yelled so loud that I think that they could hear him in town 20 miles away WELL YOU DONT NEED A RANGE FINDER when your that close!!!!!!! Uncle BIG was shaking really bad he couldn't calm down for a long time and said thats to hard on a hart im tired and need a snort of something strong. :-laf

Mr. Harman Uncle BIG said to tell you about this he has another few days with his group. They are having a great time and hunting this way is to stressful its no wonder the mountain men didn't last to long its hard on the body and nerves. Actually Mr Harman I think unk is really in his environment hunting like this. We have been a team as long as I could ride a horse and he's really wound up big time.

Uncle and Aunt are still out so I will tell them that you received their message im taking another group of hunters in the 28th dont know if we will cross paths but you never know when uncle will show up seems like they are all over his backyard these days. I have to admit that I never gave those black powder guns much more than they are a fun toy to play with. But that one sure changed my thinking about them you have to get close but it sounded like 2 gun shots 1 when the trigger was pulled and 1 when the 230 grain round ball hit, sure it was a head shot but the Elk fell to the ground like it had been hit by a falling anvil. Grandfather said we need to get a bow in that boys hands but I know that uncle BIG does not like bows so that will not happen.

Mr Harman

Uncle,Grandfather,Bob are still tuggin on the robe for ya.

Jason,

A round lead ball weighing 230Gr. flying at about 1800 fps is like gettin hit with a sledgehammer!

I call 'em "lead pies":-laf! There are no flies on a BP rifle! In a traditional style muzzle loader, within 100 yards, a roundball is like a 17th century varmint rifle;).

A Minie ball out of a rifled musket is nothing to be sneezed at. Kilt my first deer with a . 58 caliber rifled musket. Deadly! Not fast and flat shooting like a roundball. . Course, that was a LONG time ago;)!

Thanks, I appreciate the "TUGS"! More than I can convey, here!

You asked about the Pictures that uncle takes he takes many ,many pictures the family the family gets upset sometimes he is forever taking our pictures ,they ask why? He said that when he is OLDER and unable to make it to the can in time :-laf That he can sit in his rocker "and he has one on the deck of their house" watch the sun come up drink his home brew or cowboy coffee and look at the pictures I think he's afraid of getting old. The reason for them going out like this is because uncle gets a magazine one of about 40 that he subscribes to. This one is a mountain man, pioneer days type kind of like this one it has a website also they came out to do an article so getting a picture and story is going to be kind of nice for uncle. He said that he wants a bunch of extra magazines so the coffee table has a fresh one on it. :D Im sure that he will send you all copies.

Actually Im pretty sure thats a portrait BIG posted of somebody else a while back :-laf Glad to hear all is well for the BIG guy get us a picture of his latest kill when ya can!

Got up with my Dad to get the string ready to go before the hunters were up and eating breakfast. Dad and I were talking about how much we miss uncle BIG at these times. He gets up no questions asked and saddles up everyone's horse and packs the mules before anyone knows he's even up. We got to remembering some of the things that Uncle has had happen to him ,seeing that horse butt reminded me of one time I was about 15 years old. Uncle BIG and I were running the camp string to and from camp it was an exceptional year and many heads of game had been taken its not good to have allot of meat hanging around camp because of bears.

Unk and I had made 2 trips into town at 34 miles each round thats some saddle time. He was gearing up to make another loop and Aunt Penny came out of the cook tent and asked were are you going? Unk said back to town she was mad that he was going to do another loop. We made it to town dropped off the game to the processor and loaded up feed and food and started back to camp. I remember unk telling Aunt Penny that we would stay in town and get some rest but we figured we could sleep on trail we had done it many times before. On the way back we couldn't go any longer so unk threw out a tarp and laid down I leaned up against a tree and took a nap. One of his mules wandered close to him and Uncle BIG said he was kind of awake but he said that he felt it start to rain and then start to pour :-laf He woke up just in time to catch a face full of horse crap falling :-laf :-laf:-laf Well if a guy cant catch a nap in this town without getting crapped on and Peed on you just as well get up and ride. We got to camp and walked into the cook tent the hunters and family were having breakfast. Aunt Penny took a look at Uncle BIG and asked what the hell happened to you? Uncle BIG without hesitation said boys get your rain slickers on its a S**T STORM out there today :-laf

I laugh about that every time I put on a rain slicker he's the funniest guy when everyone is tired and beat up he's making jokes and laughing about something. I think I wrote in this message earlier that he makes this fun, its things like this that makes me miss him being around. Anyway time to go and that will give you some more joke ammo to use against him he's up for a good time always. Thanks for letting me spout off about my friend Uncle BIG

The question of a picture of Uncle BIG and his Elk I dont think that will happen it's something that he and my Grandfather had in common when the life of an animal is taken you are the last one to see that animal in all it's glory and that is how it should remembered. You will have to ask him on that one he's not Blackfeet but his beliefs are.

Jason,

Good story, trying to visual and smellize that one, oh boy.

OK, A pic of a live Elk and nature great thing, well then how 'bout a pic of BIG and his Mule, or in camp or on the trail. Promise no jokes about which is which.

Thanks,

Gary

BIG, you certainly have a little in comon with mr. Eastwood. Im just wonderin which one are you, the good, the bad, or the ugly? :D glad to hear your back safe n sound.

Thanks D4L Pretty beat up after this one. In for a few days and then back out with another group of hunters. Its starting to get UGLY weather up in the mountains and that could be
BAD for some but I kind of like it because its easy to track game and that's
GOOD for the guy's that paid big bucks to hunt.
