After doing some front end work this past week I noticed that my frame/under body is stating to rust pretty good. It pretty good, almost 10 years in Michigan before it really caught my eye.

Anyways, I would like to repaint the frame, suspension parts, drive shaft etc with a decent flat black paint. I know prep is 99% of a good paint job but the way the underside of the trucks are it will be impossible to get a wire brush/sander on alot of the rust. Obviously this would be with the body on, in my driveway on my back. Is if could be done in a weekend all the better.

What I am looking for is a good (read one that works) rust convertor and/or encapsilator that I can spray/paint on after getting the big stuff off. And then a good, durable paint that will hold up.

I know there is POR15 out there but I have read a couple of bad things about it lately about the paint failing, cracking, chipping in less than 2 years. For the price I would like something longer lasting than that.

I was thinking about plain ol' rustoleum (works on my hitch, LOL) but I also dont want this to be a yearly project either.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Also any tips, war stories etc on this type of a project would be awesome and as always pics would be that much better, LOL

Thanks

Never have tried Eastwood products, but they have a good reputation in the auto restoration circle. I do believe that Por-15 has a similar product.

I thought Por 15 was good stuff, I carefully prepped and painted a section of the frame of my '98 with it last year with Chassis Black. About 2 months later I accidentally splashed brake fluid on it and it ate the Por 15. When some got on the OEM coating it didn't harm it. Next time I won't use Por 15.

I had some POR15 break down and peal after being in the UV's for several years. I'm told you are supposed to paint it if exposed to sunlight. Perhaps the same is true for brake fluid. :-laf

well I got some of the eastwood rust convertor and some of the rust encapsulator paint (they had a buy one get one free promotion on the rsut encapsulator). I'm gonna do my drive shafts with it first and see how it holds up over a michigan winter. If it works out good I'll expand the project.

I take some pics when I work on it and post up before/after and if I remember long term (after winter) pics of how it held up.

I'll likely start weekend of the 24th, taking the kids camping this weekend.
