I just purchased an '02 H. O. and found that I don't have insulation like I did on my '97. Is this due to additional heat generated by the 24 valve motor? I understand this item was deleted after '98. The fastener holes are in the underside of the hood and I can buy the insulation from dodge. ($75 complete). Have any members added this? Any problems?

Under hood insulation

No problems adding it from what I have heard and it was not removed do to heat - DC pulled it as a cost savings item

BTW - My 99 had it from the factory as well as the plastic fender skirts that are missing from newer trucks.

DC stopped installing the hood insulation as a cost saving measure. Not sure exactly when they started doing it, but believe it was on the 2002 model along with several other items.

Yes, many folks purchase the hood insulation and rear wheel liners. Might try mopar4less.com (Advantage Dodge 1-800-748-2139), they usually can sell you items at a discounted price. They sold me the rear wheel liners for $59. I did not get the hood insulation, but asked. Think quoted me around $50 or less. Be careful when purchasing the fasteners for either item, you can go to Napa and get the same fasteners for substantially less.

Welcome to the TDR and enjoy your new truck!!

Thanks BV, I will add it to my truck. I love the sound of my Cummins, but the insulation will take a little of the bite away and help my neighbors.

Do a search for "hood insulation" There was a recent thread discussing this very matter. People who added the hood insulation said it helped cut noise a bit.

Do you still have your '97? If so you could swap the hood insulation and see if you like the results before purchasing a new one.

I've read on here that others have added the hood insulation and according to them there is little or no sound deadening. Can be a good thing... . or not.

I added it to my 02. It did quiet it down in the cab noticably, and it doesn't echo off the neighbor's houses so good :D . The main reason I put it on is trying to maintain heat in the engine compartment in the winter after a shut down and to keep the heat away from the paint on the hood in the summer.

hood insulation

I have a 2001 that came from the factory with it. I haven't had any underhood heat issues with my ETH, so I know that is not the reason for it missing on yours. By the way, I'll bet that you are also missing the full fender liners from the rear wheelwells.

I added the insulation to my 02. Dealer sold the insulation and the mounting clips for $38. Takes 2 people about 5 min to install and inside cab noise seemed some better.

Ask your dealer for a discount since the truck should have come with it anyway, saved me a few bucks.
