Understanding Performance Boxes

Just trying to understand the different boxes out there and how do i know what box does what as far as a box that does timing and one that does fuel pressure or how ever it works. Trying to find out some knowledge about this topic!! thanks for any input.

The best way to cut to the chase is pull up a member named DLENO. Ck out his threads and look for one called Performance Box Summary or Fueling Box Summary,. . something on that order. It was a 2 or 3 part editorial in the TDR Magazine. A couple of the very newest boxes/downloaders may not be in there but many of the popular enhancements are in that summary. ck it out.

Yes in general they mean the same in the performance context.



Don't feel bad about trying to figure it out. I have tried 6 boxes and 3 downloaders now and still am trying to figure it out.

My understanding is a timing (only) box advances the timing and fires the injector sooner.

A duration box holds the injector open for a longer time. Naturally this will retard timing of the overall power stroke somewhat if this is all you do.



Some boxes do both, so you can start the injection sooner and hold it open longer.



Somebody speak up if I'm not right.

My understanding is NO, they are not the same. Duration being the length of time you actually have injector spray into the cylinder and Timing being how far advanced is the timing relative to stock and usually it is how far in advance to the piston coming to TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke.



My experience first hand and based on what I have run on my truck is that a Duration ONLY box runs HOT (EGT wise) and that when you add Timing to a box then you get both performance and a cooler running engine, which is very important in a diesel. My $. 02.
