BANDS ADJUSTED

93 W250, Std. cab, Getrag, 3. 54 gear, 110,000 miles, pump replaced with an overhauled unit at 22,000 by the dealer. Around town performance, especially on hills, seems to have steadily degraded. Checked the obvious, valve adjustment, fuel and air filters, visual of turbo. Recently installed boost and EGT gauges with the following readings:
60mph level cruise - 2psi - 575 degrees
70mph level cruise - 4psi - 675 degrees
max boost - 15. 5 to 16psi
max temp - 1025 to 1050 degrees

Whats next? Is the std. pump timing check worthwhile or should i go direct to the spill port timing method? In what publication can I find the spill port timing procedure? How do i confirm pump was properly adjusted at overhaul? I would like to confirm all components are operating properly beforehand but if I need to modify I am ready. It seems the 16cm2 hot end turbo housing and a set of injectors are the best move. After suffering a roadside breakdown I am a little leery to "turn up" the pump.

Thanks in advance for the help!

There was a post in this forum called Hot Pre 93 I believe and there was alot of info that Old School shared for Big Don on his truck. This has alot of stuff that may answer your questions.
The post was a couple of months ago, but just use the search feature to find it.

Hey Jet Tech!

It sounds like your truck just isn't getting enough precious diesel fuel to let the magic happen!

I agree with Lil' Dog, do a search & scan the old threads for this subject, there has been much written. Set your topic selector to "Show All" instead of "Last 20 Days" and check the "Best of the Board' (bottom of forum page) for first generation trucks.

Once you do a search & catch up on some past reading you might find the name, "Ted Jannetty" of Jannetty Racing Enterprise fame (in Connecticut) has appeared more than a few times. Give him a call (203) 753-RACE or www.jannettyracing.com and ask his opinion of your performance concerns.

With his knowledge & your credit card your truck is guaranteed to SCREAM!

Hello Jet Tech: As Lil Dog suggested, check out the 1st Gen archives for the posts in Hot Pre 93. There is some interesting reading.
You're correct. . a 16cm housing will give you good "bang for the buck" when combined with a set of built injectors.
Look at the TST site thru the classified links, they have some great "turn up" recommendations along with Dave Fritz's Ram Page. Dave has a detailed blow by blow account of turning up the 1st Gen VE44 pump.
A word of caution... read and don't turn up the three main adjustments too radically without larger injectors.
Good Hunting!

Unless that egt is before the turbo, it's already hot. Going on the assumption that those readings are post-turbo, I'd say your timing is off - specifically, retarded. If you can get over 1000 degrees post turbo w/out turning up the fuel, and have no power, something else is wrong. So, start with airflow (boost leaks, airflow obstructions, plugged muffler, bad turbo) and then go to timing - verifying the plunger lift in the pump and the TDC pointer in the engine.

After ya done all that, and you have lotsa air and timing's right, then you can change injectors and put in more fuel...

Power Wagon, I should have specified, EGT readings are pre turbo in the exhaust manifold. Probe is 2" upstream from the turbo flange.

Although I stand by the timing comments, egt's (post turbo) of a mere 700 to 750 mean you're not burning much fuel. Bombs away #ad
