Archived unknown object in axle

OK guys need your help truck is a 1996 3/4 ton 4x4. Doing ball joints pulled axle out on pass side and out came 2 pieces of what looks like 1/8 diam cloth rope about 6 in long. Both ends had some sort of sealant on them what gives???



this has stopped me in my tracks is this a seal or garbage???

Probably garbage left by the installer at the factory. Nothing came out of mine when I replaced the ball joints.

It does sound like somebody was after a temporary fix for a leak or trying to keep out the grit in the tubes?
