Here's one for you guys...

Every now and then when I slow down after some hyway cruising the oil pressure light comes on (my heart usually stops at this point). Usally when this happens the gauge still indicates everything is OK. Sometimes the gauge shows no pressure too tho. The oil level never changes, it's always full.

Is there a common problem with the oil pressure sender(s)? Has anyone else had this trouble?

I do have a mechanical gauge that I used to trouble shoot my other truck when the sender unit on it packed in - at this point, this seems like the next step.

Anyone got any theorys?

Billy,
Working in the dealership I see this on a pretty regular basis and not just with the diesels. For some reason these sending units don't take well to high temps very well, especially for extended periods of time. Verify your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge and if it is good replace the sending unit.
Hope this helps.

i agree on checking the sending unit first. I had a '91 cavalier have a very eratic and low oil pressure reading that would indicate a bad pump. Went ahead and changed the pump turned out to be a cheap sending unit. I have a buddy who has a '95 dodge 3500 with cummins that had a bad oil pump that had to be replaced. it was pretty pricey about 600 from what he said

I'm pretty sure it isn't the pump because I should hear some knocking if there was no Oil Pressure. Maybe it's wishful thinking tho.

It has 360+ kms on it but runs perfectly and burns no oil and has no blow by. I'm hoping my mechanical gauge will tell me the same story as it did on my Chevy - bad sensor.

Scott.

Mine has given trouble for some time. The oil light never comes on, but sometimes when I accelerate, the gauge goes down. I let off and it goes back to normal. Then it will work fine for a while. I figure there is a short or a bad sensor. It is one of those things I have been meaning to change but never have. The only time that the oil light comes on is when I was using the thinner Amsoil and on a very hot day at idle. I changed back to the 15w-40 and it never comes on. I need to change the sensor, I think. Does anyone know if the light and gauge are tied to the same sensor or are they independent and it might be the gauge in the dash?

I too had that problem on an intermittant basis - quickly identified it as a poor connection at the oil pressure line plug right at the block sensor next to the fuel filter. Cleaned the contacts REAL well, then applied No-OX, no more problems so far...

Ditto, on the connector, having the same type of problems with mine, and my Cummins was just rebuilt with everything new. I have been checking connectors and found that the main one by the manifold is crap. I have cleaned it and it is working better but I am going to install a Stewart Warner mechanical oil pressure gauge to be sure. I will put a T in so I still have the OEM gauge but will have SW gauge to be sure. Its always nice to see the REAL oil pressure lbs #ad
. Does anyone out there know of a aftermarket supplier of Dodge truck wiring harness ? The one I have is a OEM piece of s**t.

unclebilly,
replace your sender, they suck, my dumptruck did this at highway speed in the summer with the trailer connected; had to drive home with heart stopped. Replaced sender, solved problem. #ad

Wiring isn't one of DC's strong suits. My temp gauge goes balistic if the engine gets up to the point to kick in the fan. All else its pretty steady-eddy.
Also, get your thermostats/parts from Cummins if you need it sometime. That piece of junk from DC has kept my a$$ cold for 4 years and I thought it was normal... . Just changed it out last week and now get heat at idle, wow heat!!!

Wow, a thermostat...

That would have been great last week. My truck starts to get luke warm inside just as I get to work and the defrost...

What cummins dealer do you get your stuff from? I work on 52st SE and there are a few places nearby.

Passed through High River last week, infact we had supper at McDicks.
