Unreliable Turbo Diesels?

New Emision Standards

The only 'V' that I know about is the Cummins "Triple Nickle" a 555cid V6, but didn't know Bluebird was using that as late as 1994. I thought that that was an early '70's engine. A 5. 9 sounds a little light for a Tennessee bus

In all the checking on Cummins web sites I could not find a 5. 9 V8. They did make a 903 V8 that was in OTR trucks. Like C. D. Day said it might have been a V6 or the add may have been wrong & it is really a 5. 9 six.

Looks like they had the flunkie that takes out the trash to type up the ad. "Cummings" engine... . isn't that the one owned by Ford? If that is the case, it MUST be a V-8! Someone who drives a Ford would never want a "little 6 cylinder" engine! Must be the reason they dropped the 4. 9 gasser!:-laf

Youre absolutely right, Ford owns Cummings, but Ford cant use the Cummings engine due to that indefinite time framed contract that Dodge and Cummings signed back in 1988. It must be true, I read it on the INTERNET!!!!.

Its so sad, I actually had a service advisor at a FORD dealership tell me that Ford owns 100% of Cummins to this day...

So now I get it !!
Ford bought a sorry engine company named Cummings and took a loss in a sweetheart deal for Dodge to buy these engines. Now I know why ford does not run the Cummins engine. Finally makes since.
Thanks Ford.

That "Triple Nickle" is a Cummins V8 engine, they also made the 903 V8, I know that Cummins also made a V6 but at this time I don't remember the CID of that engine, but it was not the "Triple Nickle" (555 CID).

Years ago, my dad bought an older Kawasaki loader with something like 30000 hrs on it from a kaolin mine. It had a large nonturbo Cummins V8 engine in it. It actually ran quite well although it did like to roll the coal. I think the Kawa was something like an 80 series or so.

I remember two versions of the V6 one being 353 Cu. In. the other 378. I also remember the 903 as not having a very good reputation... ...

Cummins had several V configurations in 70's-early 80's v6-378,v8-504, v8-555 all mfg. in England, had marginal reputations, very expensive to overhaul, Made V903 in Columbus, had camshaft problems early on , after they fixed that it was an extremely reliable and long life engine just never caught on, It's still made for some military applications. Cummins v12-v18 industrial engines currently manufactured are leaders in their markets.

thats funny i read in diesel power ford owned 10% of cummins through stocks which was enough to get a seat on the board. but they since liquidated that i think in 1994.

As far as the v-8 cummins goes. I was out in the driveway working on a really ugly ragged out truck, I had ratty looking coveralls on loaded in grease. a doctor in a BMW stopped and asked me to change his valve cover gasket in his 06 BMW. I asked is it a V-6? he said yeah. I asked which bank was leaking. he was confused and we popped the hood. the plastic on the engine was as a cummins and all 6 cylinders were as inline with 2 cylinders under the "extended" cowl. some people dont know the difference between v-8 and inline 6. some people just dont know WTheck their talking about. thats prolly all it is

This is a 1934 Auburn. I cant read the print I have but I remember that Mr. Cummins fitted this Auburn with a 6 cylender Cummins Diesel and got like 35 mpg... Did a cross country trip.

The last pic is a Diesel Powered Race Car
