I just returned home from a 15,900 mile trip to Cancun, Mexico and back to Alaska.

The Dodge at 136k miles now performed flawlessly except for... ..... the "whoo'ing" sound at start up. It was there when leaving Alaska and grew worse to where it worried me going into Mexico. I had it looked at in McAllen, Texas at Burns Dodge. After a $2100 clutch/T. O. bearing and pilot bearing job I headed to my 5th. whl. On the way it "whooed" again. All that and they said the old clutch was ok but the TO bearing and some mysterious clip was broken.

We ignored the sound and headed into Mexico where it "whooed" almost every morning when 1st starting up. After a few weeks it started to do it less and less until several weeks ago in Indiana it stopped completely and is gone, I hope.

Some one asked me if i had my AC worked on recently. I had. A new compressor in Anchorage. He suggested that may be the source. ???

Any ideas????

I also did not need the extra lift pump, serpentine belt, u-joints, started contacts or rad. hoses that i took along.

Better to be safe than sorry as the saying goes.

Also..... my son JR2 is considering buying a Ford diesel Excursion. What is he thinking about???

Jack. . the sound your describing... is it like a vacume switch trying to pull down ?... how long did it last after start up. . seconds, minutes. . mili seconds... just trying to picture what your saying

not a sound like the brake sound with low vac. that we sometimes hear iin cold starts

Road Warrior,

I know that was high but when you are 4500 miles from home, have two other rigs waiting on you, bent over w/o vaseline and need something fixed you just have to take it like a man. The clutch does work much better though.

Willyslover,

The sound lasts for maybe 2 secs and does it two or three times about 10 secs. after start up. I tried to relate it to many different things but never got it pin pointed. Your idea of a vac pump noise may be on the right track but... ... . how come it quit and never does it anymore. Will it come back in a big way and shut me down??

The sound seems to come from the transmission/clutch area but that can be deceiving too.

Thanks for your help though and I will pursue the vac pump idea.

Jack
