Steering problems

Well guys, 3200 miles on the 215 motor. Cummins placed the HP side power steering line on top of the motor mount. Wore a hole in the line. Since I drive 500-700 miles in a straight line, never knew I lost the pump AND the Booster pump as well. Cost ? ONLY $ 1,810. 00 Cummins is replacing the line and labor. Back to the motor... ... ... I must have a DUD... Actually do not notice any more pulling power than my ol wore out one. I pulled GVW at 23,000 lbs to Pittsburg, Pa. Even going up Jellico, Mtn in N. Tenn. My old 160 did the same performance. EGT & Temp is running cool just has NO power compared to what I replaced. Could this be a "break in" thing? Gotta tell ya, not too impressed or happy with this swap. Or Cummins for that matter. But thats just my $. 02 cents. It will be at Cummins Monday morning to fix the AC & to tell them of the off performance. But that Booster/Vac, pump is a high $$$ piece. Wow. Have a great weekend guys Mike
BTW, After a pull the eng. has a severe shake more side to side. Almost like a big block w/o a few wires off the plugs. This was going on with the 160 horse motoras well. Any ideas ??? After I get unhooked from the trailer and bobtail for a while w/o a load it gets better. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike.

What you're describing is a real bummer.

Is the shop going to pay for the PS pump and vacuum pump? They should-faulty labor! Their misplacement of the hose directly caused the failure.

As far a pricing goes the more "touchers" the higher the price.

EXAMPLE: Get a dipstick from Dodge for the Cummins: about $45. 00.

Supply chain is: Dipstick company-Cummins warehouse-Dodge warehouse-Dodge dealer.

Four elements "touched" the dipstick.

Get a dipstick from Cummins: $23. 00.

Supply cahin is: Dipstick company-Cummins warehouse-Cummins dealer.

One less toucher-50% decrease in price.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE: New VE pump from Bosch dealer $1400.

Supply chain: Bosch factory-Bosch warehouse-Bosch Dealer.

New VE pump from Cummins $2700.

Supply chain: Bosch factory-Bosch warehouse-Cummins warehouse-Cummins dealer.

Again, one less toucher and 50% decrease in price.

Eliminate those touchers!!!

The PS pump is a Saginaw unit and the Vacuum pump is a WABCO unit.

My engine idle slows sometimes when it's a really hot day and I run the engine hard. I do not know why, maybe the fan clutch is engaged pretty tight and the load is more than usual. Not as bad as you describe though.

It sounds like your 160 HP engine was more like 230 HP.

If you start modifying the 215 you should really see a difference.

Wish you well!

Makes you wonder if some of the difference is in the intercooler. Some of the 215 pumps didn't get 'timed' right. Maybe something there. Definately time to call Mark @ TST for the 605 plate. #ad

I hate to rain on parades here... but I've GOT to say it, since it needs to be said... ReCon is ReJunk... Your engine is probably well-built, but the pump and injectors are most likely not very good. There's a strong possibility you have ReCon injectors, which means they could already have an unknown number of miles on them - including even beyond the effective life. Also, ReCon pumps are known for not being set very precise, and they LOVE to set the fuel anywhere from the bottom of the allowable range to 5-10% low. Not only that, there's a really good chance the timing is off - the TDC pin is poorly placed, and the kids who did the pump weren't very careful.

Now, if you can find someone who'll sell you thier 50K or less 215 hp injectors (used), they'll probably be better than what you have - unless you lucked out and have brand new nozzles (I doubt it). And, if you can get the TDC pin located accurately, and then get someone to do a true "flow timing" (some call it "port closure") on the engine to 14-15 degrees, and slip the little plate ahead . 010" to . 020", your truck will probably wake up and run very nicely, still with low temps and better fuel economy.

Sorry to hear about this as well, and hopefully the lack of power is just under-bombed. All will be well with a few tweaks!

Concerning injectors in general - what is the useful miles/hours on a set of these stock in a 1st gen (1992 to be exact)? It has 150K on it, 70% highway, so the hours aren't so high.

I beginning to suspect an injector as a possible cause for my intermittent idle problem where it idles fine for a while, then looses rpms rapidly and almost dies.

Thanks, Jon.

With a recon eng. It comes with the 2 yr 100,000 mile waranty. But I start BOMBing it and that gets shot in the rear. Its a shame, but is the case. the truck is @ Cummins as I type. They found 2 injector lines rubbing, and the charge air fitting rubbing. But thats all so far. And no I'm paying <paid> for the vac/ps unit. I'll fight this one. All they are going to replace is the line & labor. About $100. 00 This really bites. But right now, I'm just looking to get some power back. Thanks Mike

Cummins, just called. Seems the p-pump had an internal govener failure. which would severely reduce the power. They opted to order yet another pump rather than rebuild this one. So hopefully this will correct the no power thing. Have a great day guys. Mike
