ISB in Ford F350.....Done!

FordCummins website

Well,

as soon as I got it drivable I have been having to drive all over the place. I have racked up over 5k miles now with no real problems. One bad electric fan controler which I replaced. One dead short due to a wire I was going to route better when I got around to fixing the fan controler. That short killed all electric power but the engine kept running fine. I did not know it till I looked at the gauges and there was nothing showing anywhere. I pulled over and fixed the fuseable link and found the short and everything was ok.

The drive line is holding up ok for now. The engine seems to have almost endless amounts of power. I am tring to dicipline myself from using it too much to save my relatively weak drive line. I have done some hard acceleration runs though and nothing has given up yet. I am hoping with a little comon sense I will be able to continue using this drive line. Here are the pictures:#ad
You can see my other posts for specifications etc.

It is so much fun to drive that it is boring to drive other vehicles. Nothing else has the bottom end power of this engine!

Stevie,

That is a Ford Powerjoke intercooler. I got it on ebay. It is almost new take out. I paid $225 + shipping for it. It is pretty big.

Looks like it took a BIG shoe horn to get it in;) . Nice job!!

I had a scout with the Nissan 6cyl in it and it was a dog. Needed a turbo and deffinately higher gears for cruising the freeway.

Outstanding

That is one sweet conversion. If you are running the standard Dana 44 rear axle, you can get a full floater kit that will make it like a 1 ton style, where the axle only provides torque, not wheel support. 3. 08 gears were common, would be a good match.

What transfer case are you running?

Doug,

I have a cummins adaptor going to a Chevy style bellhousing and clutch. I got the heaviest duty stock clutch I could buy from Southbend Clutch which turned out to be a chevy diesel clutch. Next is and advanced adaptors Ranger overdrive box feeding into a grany gear GM SM420 4 speed to an adaptor feeding into a Dana 300 gear type transfercase with a 4 to 1 gear kit installed. This gives me super low crawl gears. I have now got a set of 2. 72 gears to install in the front and rear Dana 44 axles wich will give me the equivilant higher gear as I get with the overdrive. It feels like it would be perfect to have this set of gears to improve my milage and quiet the engine down. I have PLENTY of torque for higher gears. The clutch is holding up very well and has not slipped on me yet. I am hoping not to twist off the 1 1/8" imput shaft. So far things have been holding up to full throttle acceleration in fourth gear and overdrive but I don't do it all the time. I would love to run the quarter mile and see how fast it is but I can't justify breaking parts for that. It is so fast! It takes self dicipline not to drive it hard but there is no excuse for me to be breaking parts. I need this truck to use. It's not just a toy. I'd like a full floater kit but they are pretty pricey. I've heard that the ring and pinion or the drive shaft usually gives before the axle shaft. Hopefully I woun't be finding out.

I don't know what type of off-roading you are doing. But with the torque plus the 4:1 transfer case... if you have tires tight into a rock or up against an obstacle, it will be easy to split a 44 axel or stub shaft.

I would be sure and carry spares if I was away from civilization.

You are right about the price of the floaters. You can buy a rebuilt 14 bolt or D60 for about the same price.

The 4 to 1 and the SM420 with 7 to 1 first gear will break axles no problem with a 4cyl engine. I have never broken an axle (knock on wood) because I am carefull and have a feeling about what is hapening with my wheels. I am not a big rock crawler person anyway. I just like have low gears for control. I can creep over things carfully at very slow speeds or I can manuver a trailer into a tight spot on a hill smoothly. I am most worried about breaking axles accelerating in 3rd 4th and overdrive because of how much torque this engine has. I have decided that I like to ride my trail bike off road better than driving a big 4X4 around. I have been on the sides of steep mountains where there was a wash-out in the road and if my truck had slipped I would not be here. If I am on my Honda trail90 I just step off instead of tumbling to my death.

You already mentioned the intercooler, but the radiator doesn't look stock either.

What are the sizes of those two items... and does the radiator keep it kool enough?

Very nice install!

Mike

Mike,

Thanks.

It has a four core high efficiancy aftermarket radiator. Although a four core was not offered stock it will fit any IH scout. That is a stock Ford Powerstroke intercooler and it is bigger than the ones that come on dodges. I dosen't have any cooling problems. Most of the time the electric fan does not even come on. If I was towing really heavly on supper hot days things might be different - I don't know. This truck is too small to tow loads heavy enough to make the cummins work hard I think.
