I just ran across the email message from Horton concerning the Fan Clutch.

Subject: RE: Fan Clutch for 98. 5 Dodge diesel

Hi John,

sorry, we no longer have an application for that engine.

We still supply the clutch, but don't have any more fan blades for them.

They used a special alloy that is no longer available.

If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call.

thanks!

John,

Thanks for the post. As I said in the other thread that seems like a load of crap to me. Certainly Horton is making fan blades for other applications so I do not know what is so special about the material of the blade for our Dodge Cummins applications. Who knows

Well, they will still sell the clutch. Just no fan blades to put on it.

Maybe a good enterprising TDR member can come up with fan blades for a Horton clutch assy?? ;)

As any of you know that have a Horton on their truck know, their fan is guaranteed for a million cycles. I don't think that they make that fan anymore. Besides, Horton has been making these fans for the Cummins long before D bought out C.

Chipstine,

I ran my stock fan with my Horton Clutch for about 2 years before I realized that I had to have the supplied fan. I had to get one because the dealer sold me one without the fan. Horton was outstanding and sent me one at no charge.

What's the big deal about using the OEM fan with the Horton clutch? If you ran yours for 2 years without any problems... I don't see why other people couldn't consider this as an option...

I guess now I am wondering the same thing?

I know the Horton fan has more blades. Does this mean it will move more air? I would imagine the air it moves have to do with the total surface area of the blades and not just the number of blades?

more likely the horton should have a plastic fan that weighs less so when it turns on at 3000 rpm it doesn't slip the fan clutch so bad the ones we have had on our big trucks have been plastic and even so when pulling hard at max rpm's it really kicks in and will squeal belts pretty easily

Surface area, pitch, number of blades, diameter, shroud clearance...

Are the Horton fans on the Cummins/Dodge plastic? I've only seen one or two of those setups and I don't remember what the blades were made of.

Special alloy? That sounds far fetched... like a response they pulled out of their butt to explain why they don't make the fans anymore...

Horton Fan Blades

I checked with a magnet the blades on my Horton are an alloy.

The mounts are a light grade steel. My guess is that being lighter it is less stress on the clutch when it engages.
