I had been thinking my new friend, the hotshotter I met at the local dealer a few weeks ago with the bad engine in a new '07 Ram Cab and Chassis truck, had his troubles behind him.

Well, I guess not. He called this afternoon. He had made a delivery to the OKC area and was southbound on I-35 nearing the OK/TX state line. He has lost power and is struggling along again, foot to the floor, barely maintaining 50mph on mild grades with the traffic whizzing by. He has no CELs or codes set yet, just no power and struggling along consuming fuel like it has a hole in the tank. He is pulling his tandem flat bed trailer with a light load in no-wind conditions. He's troubled.

I suggested a good dealer I know in Gainesville, TX but he plans to try to make it home to East TX where he lives then on to Lafayette, LA to make a delivery if he can.

I suggested he began thinking about calling a lemon law attorney. I don't know if his truck is eligible yet but if it was mine I'd be very frustrated.

That's a damn shame. It's bad enough when a truck is a hobby, or hauls your toys around, but when that is your means to put bread on the table that is just terrible.

well, I guess this is the first real trouble that has been posted on a C&C and there has to be something wrong that the dealers are not finding. Barlow, why doesn't he post first hand on TDR? Maybe he can get together with member "EB" down in the Houston area and go where he took his C&C after the first tech screwed him up. There are two different C&C engine setups for 07, you can tell the difference through physical features and Blue-tech. The older version (pre 07 build date) has no cover over the EGR tube unlike mine (after Jan 07). Do you know which version he has, also he needs to take it to a Cummins shop for this continuous problem, even if he has to lemon it.

I encouraged him to join TDR, he had never heard of it until I mentioned it. I asked him a few days later if he'd remembered to read some of the threads I told him about (EB's) and he told me he'd forgotten about it. I doubt he's the kind of guy who will join or even browse seeking answers to problems. He is not a technically-oriented type. This is his first turbodiesel truck and he readily admits he doesn't know anything about it.

I didn't press him but apparently only his wife uses a computer. When I sent him material a few weeks ago he told me later his wife received it but nobody replied.

I'm not much help on the newest engines either. I haven't seen the hood lifted on his but am not personally familiar with the new engine yet and wouldn't be able to recognize the differences between the two versions you mentioned.

I don't know the man well, a very casual friendship based on meeting him at a dealership and striking up a conversation. I don't know if he would be comfortable with too much involvement with other owners trying to help.

I've done my best to offer help and he apparently trusts me enough to keep in touch but I doubt he will follow any advice I offer.

I wish I had more information or better news. I'm disappointed also. I have seen or heard nothing from the appearance of his truck to the questions I've asked or the comments he's made to think his problems are caused by anything in the way he uses or maintains the truck. His truck is clean as a pin when I've seen it and he is dressed neatly. Not a slob who neglects his equipment.

If we take on face value what he has told you, he needs to lemon law his truck and carefully weigh out all options with what he buys. I remember in 1993 I talked to an owner of a new CTD at that time and he was extremely frustrated with his truck. I guess all makes has there lemons and is the reason why there is a lemon law. Its just a shame he is a first time Diesel owner and worse yet, he is a first time CTD owner.

Steve...

Steve,

. . and even worse, the man lost his job a year ago and jumped into this hoping to make a living for his family. He's probably in a tougher situation than he told me as most of us can imagine.

I wish him the best of luck.
