Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) towing in overdrive?

The bombing bug has finally go to me. Let me here your suggestions. I tow a 3 horse gooseneck frequently, so I don't want to compromise any of my towing abilities. In my comute to work I climb about 1500-2000 ft of elevation and live at 9500 ft already. I don't know if the alltitude has alot do with it but going up and down that hill I might have to watch egt's if I get caught behind someone that is traveling at that right speed that makes me have to either lug one gear or drive at the top of the other gear. I spoke with Joe Donnely and i am going to go with a number 11 plate, but should I maybe run a gsk kit as well. I don't want to change out clutches thou. I am looking for more power but I don't have the money to do clutch and transmission upgrades as well. What combination do you guys think I should go with.

Thanks and God Bless

Russ

I posted this on the other 2nd Generation forum by accident I meant for it to be here. Sorry.

The #11 is probably a good choice for your towing duties. What turbo are you running, as well as turbine housing?? Any other fuel increasing mods other than the #11 plate?? The altitude could pose a EGT issue, but your increased timing should compensate for that very well. :D

I have a stock turbo and housing. EGT's are not a regular problem. The highest egt's that I have seen were 1150 and that was bogging the engine and towing the trailer up to the house with three horses in it.

So from your sig the only thing you have done is the timing advance?? That would explain the considerably low EGTs for the altitude your are operating at. You may want to go to a 14cm wastegated turbine when you put that #11 in. That should keep things nice and cool with a little added boost as well. What did Mr. Donnelly fill you in for a "towing" bombing plan??

You are correct on the sig part. I can usually run down the highway here at 65-70 mph and my egt's are 600-650. That is a straight run though. Not to many of those around here that you can get a real correct reading. So far Joe said to do the #11 and he was not sure about what size of a turbo? What do you guys think about some gsk's.

Russ

I would definatley go with the 3K GSK, it made wonderous power imporvements out of my engine. Fuels the engine all the way to about 2800 before mechanical fuel cut starts instead of the stock 2200 or 2300. Make sure you get the Piers kit, they have great descriptive instructions for going in through the side of the pump to replace the springs rather than going through the top of the pump under the AFC housing.

As for a turbo, I would probably stick with the stock HX-35 and just invest in a 14cm wg turbine, but who knows with your timing advanced as it is, you may not experience that high of EGTs with the gsk, #11 and the 12cm turbine. Trial and error... ... :)
