On my 6. 9L fords I always adjusted by ear. No ill effects from it. On my 95' 12v, it will blow white at 2k in neutral, but not under a load. The combustion knock on my 12v also is a lot quieter than most 12v's I test drove. Can I just advace just a little and see what happens without using all those complicated guages and timing tools?

Also I never did find out how you actually make the adjustment in searching this site. How do you adjust it on the P7100?

I have advanced my timing with the use of gauges. Not an expert, but its not just like turning a distributer or rotating the pump. You need to essentially remove the oil filler and remove the pump gear, so the injection pump doesn't turn, crank the engine back some and then replace the pump gear. I guess that would be the simplest form of advancing it, but I wouldn't ever do it that way and its really more involved than that. Use the dial indicators, follow the lengthy directions and do it correctly. Lots of post on here on how to do it. I followed the directions as stated above, took me an afternoon+some my first time. Just my $0. 02

Good luck

I would not personally try just a "tad" on these pumps. You can easily wind up with a lot more than you think. Buy the kit and do it properly.

It's easy to advance it too far, then you'll kiss your head gasket goodbye in no time. By the time you advance it to the point the combustion sound changes noticeably chances are you've gone too far.

And if it sounded or ran like crap, how would you know where it was before you started? The tools let you know where you start, and where you go from there. Not to mention, they make the job easy.
