Install a GPS:confused: Possibly cheaper than fixing the speedometer? and will add some functions.

Most likely your VSS is bad, or has a bad connection. The VSS and all the wires coming off of it tend to be down in the muck, salt, snow, and whatever else you might run through, so they eventually give up the ghost. Keep in mind, I'm not sure if it means anything to you or not, but all the while the speedo isn't working, your odo probably is not racking up the mileage. Good for you if you wanna cheat the next buyer... bad for you if you, like me, brag about how high your mileage is.

The VSS should be the weird looking wire harness that you can rotate, attached to the back of the transfer case or, on your truck, transmission.

Also check the square drive tangs on both the VSS and the adapter attached to the trans. Check the female end of the adapter to be sure it isn't rounded out.

I can relate. On my 92 the speedo works ( and is accurate ) but the odo works somedays and not others ( just like my brother-in-law :-laf ) Anyone got any ideas on that? Shadrach

Brother in law

Can't help you there Shadrach, you're on your own. My truck also does the sometimes thing. It has gone as long as 3 days not working and as little as 5 minutes. Now at least I know what to look for.

Happens from time to time in my '93. I have just learned to slap the top of the dash above the gauges. It will pop back on.

Odo failure is normally due to the gears in the speedo head beginning to fail. Don't worry about it being intermittent, that won't last long. It'll soon just quit completely.
