My son has an '05 shortbed NV5600 w/2" lift and bigger tires. He pulls a toyhauler and needs (wants) an overdrive. After looking at the US Gear website, it looks like you have to CUT the fuel tank and modify it (make it shorter. Is this true? I don't mind installing this thing and driveline mods go with the territory but I'm not about to start cutting a plastic fuel tank. What have you guys had to do here?? Any advise??

Thanks in advance...

Paul...

WOW, that doesnt sound like a very good idea to cut the tank????? How would you put it back together? I would say just buy a smaller one and mount a toolbox tank in the bed. There is a company that makes fuel tanks for these trucks I forgot the name of them though, there ad is in the back of Diesel Power. Let us know how it goes Oo.

Got this from US Gear...

"Yes, the fuel tank has to be shortened by a few inches on the 4x4 Dodge. "

Best regards,

Have no experience with either, did look at them both. Saw that Gear Vendors states that the fluid is to be changed every 5,000 miles. Didn't like that. Went from 3. 54 to 3. 73 rears as a more economical solution. Puts me at 68 MPH at 2,000 RPM which is the sweet spot for my engine when I tow in overdirive. Only gross at a little over 16,000 lbs.

Paul, Saw your post about the U S Gear OD unit, and yes on some vehicles modifying the fuel tank is part of the install. This is because the US Gear OD mounts between the transmission and the transfercase. I too am interested in an overdrive unit and have owned a Gearvendors unit on a previous vehicel. I was always concerned about cone clutch wear and where the Gearvendors unit would leave me stranded.

I am interested in a US Gear OD, but they don't currently install their unit BEHIND the transfer case. Even though I'd love to have one of the US Gear units I am unwilling to modify my drivetrain to accomodate the unit. I have written Tom at US Gear and he tells me that they are not going to make any adapters for any new transmissions, and wouldn't entertain an installation behind the Tcase. I even wrote the VP of marketing at US Gear and he wasn't courteous enough to return my email.

I have a couple of posts on this subject on this website from a few weeks ago, so you might want to check them out. I would be willing to resume my email campaign to US Gear if you'de care to add in... ... ... ... . Lektrikman

Its interesting that the YaHoo's at US Gear don't reply to mail from prespective buyers of a $3k unit. What is going to happen if it crashes?? Could get real ugly...

On the other hand all correspondance to Gear Vendors has been answered practally the same day. Research of threads on the TDR, it appears that any warranty or repair work is handled honestly with GV and most folks are very happy w/ the unit...

I know there are some pros and cons to both, but i'm not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling with USG.
