I tell ya BIG, the worst thing a man can do is set a wooden product in a dirt hole surrounded by concrete. It'll rot everytime.

I have peeler core post on my land that were set with only dirt almost forty years ago and they are just as solid as the day they went in.

Mr JHawes

I think you know where im going with this post we have talked about a new barn for the gang. I have driven around the area and looked and talked to people about their barns likes and dislikes. All have said NO TO CONCRETE floors ,just dirt. More maintenance? yes but a bunch better for the animals.

I found the barn style and looking for pole set ideas. FIL/BIL said same as you direct bury and to use pressure treated wood for poles. Im just looking at longevity in the building. I guess if it lasts 40 years I wont have to worry to much about it as I wont be here.

Building cost are not as bad as I thought but lots of work to get it done. This is the type of barn that we are looking at enclosed because of the MT cold and I work in there most everyday taking care of the gang.

Great idea with the polycoat. I the old days we would tar them then wrap the crap out of them with visqueen

The reason posts rot is because people encapsulate the entire bottom of the post with concrete. Dig the hole a few inches deeper, put in couple of inches of 3/4" crushed rock, put in post & another couple of inches of crushed rock and then concrete. This allows the water to past through the post into the ground instead of being a container for water.

45+ year fence and posts are still solid as the day installed.

Why not just use sonotube like Big has to and mount post on top? A 3' ft hole, 12" + wide and full of crete makes a better footing.

I just follow the rules I don't make them. I don't want to get it built and then for some reason the inspector comes by or something and then have to do it all over again. I think the building would withstand the elements better and I would feel better that it was built right and not going to POSSIBLEY fall down in forty years :-laf (like I will be around)

I just don't like the concrete pilings where the gang can stub a hoof or get cut. Some pic's of other barns in the area that are kind of the same idea. All those posts will have to be on sonotube pilings. Those stalls are a bit small blue prints of the one I was looking at are shown. Kinda gives an idea of what I was doing. Thanks for any help and info

AFTER you get the final inspection, I would make one of those extra rooms (or a stall) into a bathroom. Nothing sucks worse than "nature calling" when you are working in the barn. I had a friend put in a septic tank "under the radar" after final inspection and love having a full bathroom in my shop. Having a bathroom is just another reason for the tax assessors (at least in Georgia) to charge more school tax, which I TOTALLY do not understand! My shop does have concrete floors and metal posts. My barn is on concrete footings and is all wood.

Big ,I build post frame buildings and what I do for posts is use a laminated post that is built by the truss plant posts are three 2x6s that are treated with pices of treated 2x6x10 blocks nailed on all four side about 1/4 inch up from the base, I drill an 18 inch hole drop in a 14 inch concrete cookie 4 inchs thick then I take and open 4 bags of sacrete (DRY) and suround the post then use road base gravel to fill the hole the rest of the way up tamping as I go BTW putting the crete in dry it will soak up mosture from the ground and get hard with out shrinking away from the post and letting water get between it( the crete) and the post. I have been doing it this way for years with no problems

Thanks for the info but when I returned early from our trip into the mountains I have found out that the wife got in touch with the family members and they have started to build my barn. We should have been out for another 3 weeks before our return. They are using the sonotube and bracket for posts. I asked them if they would be able to get the wife's greenhouse done by the time we return so she can be surprised. I asked them to help out on that not knowing she had done the same. Thanks again.
