use power service additive?

i am interested in hearing from anyone who has used power service products "diesel fuel supplement" or have another recommendation. i live in colorado and want to be sure that i don't have a gelling problem, how cold should premium diesel fuel protect me too and what should i ask my gas station as far as what the contents of their premium diesel are? thanks john skalet

I have used Power Service Diesel Additive www.powerservice.com since day one 10 oz per 35 gallons



The cost is minimal in my case for the extra lubrication for the VP pump, the other items are a bonus .



Things get colder in Colorado so adjust for your area.

I use PS Diesel Fuel supplement with straight #2 and have had no problems. I am not sure but I think PS will pay your tow if you happen to gel while using their product. Another good fuel additive is Howes. I only buy fuel at truckstops because I know it will be more fresh and less likely to have water in the botton of their tanks. Whenever I have asked the attendant inside any fuel questions, I get the "deer in the headlight look. " Just my . 02. Hope this helps.

John, I use the power service supplement here and it gets insane cold. I have not had a problem with treated fuel. I have had good luck with it, and it helps to get me nearer to summer fuel economy. I have not seen a mileage gain with summer fuel and the PS but it does help my MPG's with the blended winter fuel. I would not worry about buying a "premium" fuel if you are treating it with a good additive. I have been carrying a bottle of the diesel 911 additive for gelled up and dead in the water situations for three years and have not needed it yet. Coldest I have seen yet with my truck is -26*, so I am guessing that the PS supplement works as advertised. Also, like Bob, I mix it a hair strong. If a litlle is good then... ... .

John, I have used the Power service additive ever since I 've my first TCD. It is a good product and I use #2 diesel to -30 with no problems. Another good product is Howes diesel additive. They say if their product gells up at any temp above -35(somewhere close to that)they will pay for the tow. During the summer I use Diesel treat 2000 for the increased milage. After about 3 tanks you will see the milage increase. Some of the truck stops here put the Diesel treat 2000 in their main tank so when you fill up you already have it. Hope this helps.

P. S. you can't use too much of the these 3 supplements so if you measurement is off, no big deal.

Looking at a member survey on an over the road truckers website a while back PS was by far the most popular. That either means it is either the most available, works the best or both.

Power Service

Power Service now has a Diesel Treatment 9*1*1. It's supposed to eliminate bio deposits, an re-liquify gelled fuel. Didn't get any when I was in Wisconsen this weekend, but it was on sale for 2. 95/qt. Same price as regular additive. If it is the same quality as their regular stuff, it should be a good "have it on the shelf" product for you guys in the northland.

What part of Colorado are you from?



I purchase Power Service from Wal Mart for about $10 / gal.



An important point in selecting where to buy fuel is to get it at a truck stop where they sell lots of diesel. There are some cornet gas stations that sell diesel, but sell so little of it that it sits in the tanks for a long time and can become contaminated with water. I almost always buy mine at Flying J in Aurora.

Denny, PS 9-1-1 is as the name implies for emergency use. It it's for ungelling or melting ice in the fuel and contains alcohol, a bad thing for diesel engines due to it's drying effect. Use 911 only in an emergency not for normal usage. Think it says this right on the label. Avoid any additive that contains alcohol.

I too use Power Service. Have for the past 4 years & 250,000+ miles (not all on the same truck) I have had good results (Better Mileage, easier starts) and will continure to use it.

Wall-Mart sell a 96oz jug for $10. 47 of the new blend that also raises cetane by up to 4points. I think this is the jug the previous posts might be assuming is a gallon. Just for thought, I was a a large school dist bus shed yesterday, they use it & buy it in 55gal drums. Usually a school dist will not use anything, unless a full cost vs benefit has been done. FYI

John, I have used Power Service in my truck since new, I like the added lube to the Injector pump, want to help that baby anyway I can big $$$ to replace. Tryed Howles for a while went back to P. S. Good stuff.

I have used PS since I got my truck. It is easy to get and seems to do the job. As for their guarentee, read the info on their web site. It is only with purchase by the case I believe and saving to receipts. Check it out. There is an artic formula but I don't think anyone in the lower forty eight would need it.

Power Service is available in a lot of stores. That makes it very attractive. It was also the #1 answer to my question on "do you treat your fuel?" In the summer it produces a distinct sound reduction in my Cummins. The best pricing on Power Service is from the area Home/Farm Fleet stores. Last sale prices I remember, it was $8. 00 for the 96 oz. jug. That's 3 quarts, not 4 (gallon).



I have used Howes Diesel Treat. I just used my last jug, too.



I'm planning to try the new Shell Rotella DFA. The initial pricing on the stuff is dirt cheap. I think it is around $8. 00 per gallon or even less with the coupon discount.



My brother uses Penray products. He prefers them over Power Service.



This winter will be different. I just installed an ESPAR unit. The fuel line for that is 1/8". It will not tolerate any gelling. The Cummins fuel system is very forgiving for <em>thick</em> fuel. I wiil be running around 20% #1 fuel or maybe even kerosene this winter along with a good dose of PS.

The local CFN where I fuel is cutting the #2 with 20-30% kerosene and also adding the PS additive in bulk. I don't think I will gel up, but am concerned about the high percentage of kerosene. I also add Howes lubricator to the CFN fuel as added protection.
