All,

In "the CaTCHER ECM" thread I've said e few things about how to check a used ECM. ( Wait to start light thing... )

I have received another dead ECM here. Now it's enough!

When I test this ECM on the bench, the wait to start light works fine. In the truck it flashes and no go. Never seen that one before! I didn't even think it could be possible... .

At this point, the only reliable way to test a used ECM is with your truck!

Please, before you lay down cash for a used ECM test it in YOUR truck.

To do so, there's no need to take your original ECM out. Just unplug the 50 way connector and connect it to the ECM to be tested ( let it just hang on the connector ). Nothing that can hurt your engine ( for a short test drive)!

There are mainly two different software's for the VP trucks. From 98. 5 to MY 2000 and from 2001 to 2002. If you have the wrong ECM for your truck , the engine will idle rough for a few seconds then the tach will die. The wrong ECM will also throw your truck into limp mode. No problem...

Trouble codes will be stored into the ECM you're testing. No problem...

The Check engine light will come on. No problem...

What's important is that everything else HAS TO WORK! Beginning with the wait to start light, all gauges the throttle - EVERYTHING-!

Watch your dash, the gauges... everything works???

Sure the truck will act weired but the engine has to start and you have to be able to drive the truck!!!

If you have any doubt, please contact me BEFORE you pay for a used ECM.

Thanks,

Marco

P. S. I think that several of the bad ECM's I've got here have been purchased through E-Bay...

I'm the guilty party on this one... ..... it was a used ECM off Ebay almost 2 years ago, wasn't the same year model so I never tried it in the truck. And Marco tested it on the bench just fine... ... but won't work in my truck or his truck.

Soooooo I'm screwed as far as correcting things with the seller since it was so long ago. But it did teach Marco something he hasn't seen yet, or even thought possible. So it was a learning experience for both of us. Good news is it was only $100 learning experience including the shipping Oo.

Now I'm just bummer, trying to decide what to do. Obviously I still want one one, but I owe ADT 1 ECM and another good one to flash  I wasn't expecting it to turn out quite like this, but Marco has been very quick with the information and help, couldn't ask for much more from him.

:{

Like Marco said... ... ... buyer beware on EBAY ECM's ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... test it imediatly after recieving it!

just for the record :)

all the ecm's that I have for sale are backed with a guarantee to be flashed. money back and good to go.

Ops!

Sorry Bob I should have elaborated further...

It is obvious that all the ECM's through Doug & Bob are checked very closely.

All the ECM's I get here will be checked very closely too. KatDiesel'sone has been a mistake on my side. That will not happen again!

With this thread I want to give a heads up to the guys that want to buy an ECM through other chanels. Ebay, junk yards... .
