I have seen a lot of electonic boxes for sale lately in the classifeds. . I am just curious if anybody has any opinons on buying these boxes used? Now, don't flame me on this one, I am not AT ALL implying that someone would sell a "fried" box as good, I am just mainly wondering about the warranty issues... For instance, the EDGE has a 2-year manufactures warranty. Is this only good for the original owner. If you bought a used box from someone who had the proof of new purchase date, would you still have a partial warranty????

I imagine a lot of people get certain boxes and then the "mo power" bug bites and then the only cure is the "upgrade" vaccination... ... .

Thanks,

Electronics

If the "box" has been opened, gotten wet, or been shorted in any way... stay away from it. Electronics either work or they don't. The reason I say to stay away from it if it has been opened, most people have no clue what ESD can do to electronics. The smallest discharge from your fingers (one you may not even feel) can scramble it enough to make the "box" a paperweight.

Just be careful and be sure about the disposition of the box before you buy it.

I would like to think that we could trust the members of this forum

to buy one off an auction site you are at your own risk IMHO not to imply they are out to sell you something that is no good.

depending on how things go, I may be the seller of some goodies in the near future and would hope that the membership would not think twice about buying from me. i know, i would'nt if the table were turned :D

look at what has happend a few times with vendors that have not been so good to deal with. for the most part the members has driven them off or at least exposed them to the rest of us.

Agree

I agree about trusting the membership. I have bought items 3 different time in our classifieds, and each time items were as represented. All three members accepted my personal check, and in fact shipped before they received payment.

Buy with confidence, TC

I agree with tcourse, I have purchased 3 boxes through the ads as well and all were EXACTLY as represented. I have bought one other box from an ex-member that was not what it was supposed to be and had no recourse (except to make him ugly the next time I see him:mad: ). I currently have 2 boxes in the ads and will give anyone a money back guarantee that the boxes are what I say they are and that they do work as designed when you get them. If you do not like it or you think it does not work I have no problem exchanging your check for the box, and I am willing to bet that the rest of the membership will give you the same guarantee.

If you buy and think the guy screwed you and he will not make it right to your satisfaction bring it to our attention.

Boxes

When I bought my EZ I asked one of the Edge boys about how long they would last, he said that there was not that much to go wrong, that they should last for years. And he showed me one that was being put together and how well they were sealed.

Having worked with a group designing integrated circuits, the lifetime is measured in centuries as long as they are not subjected to ESD, (electro-static discharge) or EOS, (electrical over stress). The comment posted earlier about the box either works or it doesn't is almost always correct except for some cases where ESD or EOS causes mild damage. In this case a semiconductor junction is damaged and will degrade the performance of the circuit. We call this the "Walking Wounded". The junction can degrade further and cause the circuit to fail.

I have routinely tested circuits to failure by subjecting them to heat. Any walking wounded device will usually die after several hours at high temperature. It is not practical to test a box in this way but if it makes it through a hot summer, living inside an engine compartment next to the Cummins, it should be good for a long time.

I would think that any member that has a box for sale would be selling it because they upgraded, not because it's bad. I upgraded to a Comp after running an EZ. I was happy with the EZ, it's just that with DDIII's, I wanted more flexibility to control the smoke. I'll get around to selling it sometime... with a guarantee that it works out of the box. Any member should be willing to do that much. Don't you think!?

THANKS!

Thanks for all the replies to this thread.....

I again want to clarify that I DID NOT mean to imply that any member would knowingly sell a bad box! Please do not think that at all... .....

I was just wondering about the "reliability" of the boxes and the warranty issues.....

Thanks again!

I too have had great experience buying stuff from members of TDR. I purchased an EZ and did not have any problems. I'm willing to bet most if not all of the member selling would give your money back if it does not work. I would certainly ask just to be sure.

I would think that buying from a TDR member be it electronics of other parts would be fine! Personally when I have sold things in the classifieds I offer a FULL refund if the buyer is not happy (nobody has used it yet though). This is not to say everyone does or should but I just feel like this is the right thing for me to do.

As far as electric boxes go they should last for years... . I would speak with the seller personally and explain any reservations on your part and see where the chips fall. My bet is that all the guys will stand behind what they are selling. But, this is just my $. 02 worth.

My word is my bond, and all those in the TDR who have met or dealt with me personally, know that. If I have anything to sell, it won't be junk or defective. My conscience will not allow me to do otherwise, never mind about my reputation.

I did find it terribly insulting to receive an email recently, asking about the Hx40 I had for sale(it's sold, sorry) and asking for more info and ... "don't lie , tell me how high you ran the psi on that turbo... . "

I don't need to sell anything bad enough that I would have to lower myself to lie about it, or worse yet, cheat a fellow diesel enthusiast. That's about as low as you can go.

More info.....

Well, I am pretty sure I just bought a used EZ box for my Truck from Gizmo 007. I can't wait to plug it up and just see what I have been missing... . I hope I am not dissappointed in the power gains. From reading different post here on the board, my expectaions are pretty high...

Anyway, for anyone else wanting to purchase a used EDGE box, I contacted EDGE and the 2-year Warranty IS still valid even if you are not the original purchaser. Just thought I would let everyone know... ... .

A special thanks to Gizmo 007 for putting up with all my questions. The man has a lot of patience... .....
