Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Used Truck-perform compression test?

I am looking at a 97 automatic with 200,000 miles. Does anyone recommend performing a leak down or compression test before buying? What other drive train related problems can I test for? How can I tell Whether the torque plate has been modified or other performance modifications?

Yes, maybe so.



It should have some wear with that mileage. Do you have service/maint. records for oil change intervals? Also does it smoke? (blue or extra heavy black smoke. . using oil?) Dodge can run the vin to inform you of warranty and service history. Cummins dist. would likely be able to do the same, but may follow the vehicle by engine serial #.



If this ck's out, then maybe nix the compression test. Any competent diesel shop should have the manometer (sp)

to place in the draft/vent tube for the crankcase (testing blowby), some may plug the vent tube and use the oil fill tube for their adapter and the reading. This would be a more inexpensive test than removal of the injectors to perform a compression test. . (1hr. vs 3 to 4).



On the torq. plate. Look at the afc cover on top of the P-7100 pump. The screw in the upper left corner should be of the breakoff design and likely has black paint on it.



However, many savvy upraters :) replace the break off bolt with a new one and treat it to some Cummins titanium black engine paint. You might also see if the brass elbow on the front lower side of the compressor (turbocharger) has a painted or shiny brass elbow with a set screw (uprated). This truck may be plumbed with a steel line from the wastegate to the afc (with lengths of rubber hose on either end).
