I am on my way to florida and have used 1. 5 gallons of coolant thus far... I don't see any leakage on the ground and the oil looks normal. Could I be leaking coolant into the cylinder? Maybe a head gasket? Stopped in East Tennessee (Greeneville) for the night, are there any good mechanics around?

I can't help you with a mechanic in Tenn. but it does sound as if you have a head gasket problem. Sometimes you will find some diesel or oil in the coolant also if it is a head gasket problem but not all the time. Good luck with a mechanic on Sunday.

It would help to know what year truck you have. The third gen trucks are notorious for leaking coolant towards the firewall where there is a connector joining two rubber hoses for the heater core. Do you see any leaks on the ground or on the block anywhere?

Or the water pump weep hole? The coolant will evaporate on a hot engine but will leave a trail.

If your head gasket is leaking you should be able to feel mositure on you hand when you put it in front of the tail pipe (Let it run for a whlie to get the moisture out of the exhaust system).

Also you mite get some steam out of the breather tube.

If there is excessive coolant on the ground could be the heater core is going.

We found that the thermostat was stuck open so replaced that drove the truck and it was fine. We went and hooked up to the trailer(total weight 23,000lbs) got 15 miles down the road and it started blowing out the overflow bottle. Turned around and headed to the Dodge dealer and made an appointment to get the head gasket changed. Dodge said they won't have the gasket until Wednesday. So we might be on the road Wednesday afternoon. HOPEFULLY!!

Thanks for all the help Sam
