Ok... I know this type of question isn't exactly Diesel related. But I figure this just might be the best place to ask, since everyone here owns a truck heavy duty enough to pull such a beast.
I'm looking to buy a pull behind, battery operated hydraulic dump trailers for hauling everything from mulch, sand, stone, etc... ... What ever my 2 acre property seems to need for a particular weekend project. After looking at various units, I think I've settled on two things, 1st. size(6'x10'/10k GVW), 2nd. The low profile style, which will be better if I want to tow my compact tractor around. This size trailer seems to average anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000 range(new), (including the typical options like a spare tire, etc). From companies like Bri-mar, U-dump, EZ-Dumper.
Anyway, I've gotten the feeling that Bri-Mar and U-Dump are lighter duty units and EZ-Dumper is more of an intermediate unit. A few sales reps have indicated that some models do not have strong enough hydraulic cylinders/pumps to lift a heavy load of stone or sand. Thus requiring some of the weight to be removed by hand, before the unit will be able to raise the load. This is obviously a concern to me, in that it would seem to defeat the whole purpose of having such a trailer. Probably the most impressive unit I've seen is the Foster brand. www.fostertrailers.com Naturally, it costs almost twice as much the regular units. ($7,500), and it is no longer available in a 6'x10', only 6'x12'. (12k GVW). To give you an idea of its strength, it weighs about 1,500lbs more than other units...

BUT... . in the end it just might be worth it. I guess my question to all of you is... what is your experience? dislikes/likes? Things you would do differently next time?

Great thread, even if maybe in the wrong place.

Let me know what you end up with. I am in the market for the same thing. I don't want to keep paying hundreds for 10wheel dump trucks to deliver what I could get myself with several trips of a dump trailer.

I see them all over the place but never with a big quantity load.

Deezal Man,

I don't have a dump trailer but I do have a gooseneck flatbed and a bp horse trailer that I pull with my truck. I do have some suggestions to keep in mind while shopping. Consider your empty trailer weight when choosing what gross you want. My 14k trailer weighs 5. 4k empty. Since I am only licensed at 10K, it does not leave much legal capacity. I prefer to have plenty of leeway on overloading from a mechanical point of view. Also, DC limits you to a class IV hitch. Beyond 10k they want you to go to a fifth wheel. A Canadian company, Berkelman's Welding delivers to the northeast US. (519)765-4230, check them out. Penn State University's Ag Progress Days runs August 15-17 (800)PSU-1010. I have never been to this show but there will be commercial exhibits. I bought my gooseneck for what I considered a good price at the State Farm Show.

I have had quite a bit of experience with one EZ-dumper and two Bri-mars. IMHO the EZ dumper is the heavier-duty unit. Also it is easiest to load, being very low-profile, and it comes with ramps that store on the sides. In general it just seems of more solid construction. However, the Bri-mars cost signifigantly less and have been grossly overloaded on numerous occasions without any trouble.

I have a Parker Performance 6 by 12 foot dumping trailer I use it for every thing, it has a 10000 pound cap. but I have put 6 and a half ton on it and it dumps as long as its battery is charged up it won;t have a problem. For some reason it won;t charge off my truck. I payed $4800 for it and I think it payed for its self the frist year.
