O. K here goes yet another classic Mostly Old Parts And Rust wrapped around a good engine issue. Yep DOOR ROT! :{ So now what? I got a 01 that I take absolute sick care of in terms of paint and the dang door bottoms are rotting out :( Now how does this pan out? My weep holes are clean and wide so a drainage issue is NOT the point. Is D/C going to tell me to get rammed or will they work with me? My main concern is if they do do anything will it just be new door skins ... new doors . . or what? Don't forget that my system in the truck now is at the point where it is seamless and I did Dynamat etreeme the entire inside of theese doors when the truck was just 50 thousand miles younger at the grand total of 10 thousand miles new. now @ 60K I have rotted doors and yellow fenders :(

Timbo,

Sorry about the door rot, seems kind of odd that at 50K you applied the Dynamat and all was well, now 10k latter it's rust galore! You do live up north and SALT is always an issue, but in 10k miles. Did you follow the salt truck everyday in on the way to work?? I guess you will have to choose between fixing the doors you have or getting new ones. If you fix the ones you have they make full door skins or just the bottom patch panels. If the doors are in bad enough shape, new replacements might be the best and cheaper route, labor adds up when fixing rust problems.

When you used the Dynamat, do you think it held the moisture behind it, and caused this damage? I can see something to that effect taking place. In the future, if you decide to go with the sound proofing again, they make a spray on sound deadener. It's alot like undercoating, but it should be better in areas like the door skin. I would think coating the bottom of the door and then using the Dynamat, but keeping it at least 1" up from the bootm of the door. Just a thought. I know after doing my own sound insulation project, I would not have another diesel truck without it, it is just that nice. Good luck on your truck, I know the repairs will be costly. Do you think you might just get the whole thing re-painted? I would guess that now is the time.

The dynamat was added to his truck when it was new... 50,000 miles later the rust showed up. I have the same year and mileage and I have no rot...

However, I have had front mud flaps since new, TMTT has not... He also travels up North quite a bit in the winter with the sled.

Y-K I actually stayed 2 inches off the bottom and away from all "joining" sheet metal so "wicking" would not be an issue. It's amazing the difference the dynamat made. I also did the back wall ad partial floor pan too. I also tagged up a lil NKB along with the dynamat in key areas and I have yet to have a droning issue. (I wouldn't know as I dynamatted long before I ever bombed)

I think I am just more urked at the lil' crap I find every now and again. I talked to Scott today and I guess his cousin? had BOTH doors replace by D/C with no hassles when it happened to him. That kinda eased me as he then went into how D/C knows there is an issue with this. Then I got to thinking that what he said made sense as Mopar in general was plagued with rust years ago and they wanted to turn that all arround and want to keep a tight lid on rust issues going forth. Maybee I will put in a call and see what can be done.

TqT's rig is spotless in that seam area. Even tho he does have flaps and boards teh water that gets into the door is mainly from the window channels themselves as a door is truly sealed on all sides for the most part. Yes I am sure the absense of flaps cannot help the situation but hey if the truck needed them they would have come from the factory with them. :-{} So hopefully that won't be an issue with D/C .

Tim,

I have the same problem on my 99. I treated the affected area with EXTEND rust treatment. I believe you can get it at most auto supply stores, Home Depot and Lowes. It turns any rusted areas black and hard as a rock! At least twice a year I recoat the area. The rusting hasn't spread since I treated those areas.

Same problem on my 2001 drivers side door. Little bubbles started showing up at the bottom after last winter and now brown rust showing up on the silver looks like crap. I am the second owner of this truck and there was no warranty info in the glove box. Can anybody tell me what kind of rust warranty we get, how long it lasts and if it apply's to subsequent owners.

Welcome to the club, TMTT.

My '94 has driver's side door cancer something fierce. Passenger side door is also pretty nasty.

My '98 has the driver's side door cancer as well. Passenger side is spotless...

Matt

My '97 is very clean in the door seams, do you think front mud flaps make a huge differance? Is it something that is issolated to the salt belt, or does it cross bondries and effect everyone?

My '94 and my '98 have flaps... the '98 even has (ugly) running boards...

When I bought my '94 back in '01 - it had the beginning stages of driver's side door melanoma... a few shades worse than the current condition of my driver's side door on the '98.

What I'm getting at is that the driver's side is worse than the passenger's side... on both of my trucks. Both of them have lived in salty winters their whole life (MN and MA), though...

Salt makes the roads safer in the winter... but it destroys our vehicles in short order.

my dealer replaced my doors on my 2001 no problems at all(good dealer)even ordered new parts for inside the door and new seals ect. :) Oo. not all dealers are bad. and is helping me with the heated mirror swap. :-laf

I went to the dealer yesterday with my rusty door. Said they would take care of the problem and sent me to the bodyshop they use. At the bodyshop the guy called up the dealer and asked "how should he take care of it" They told him to repair it. He told them that never works and it needed a new door. They said no just repair it. Not what I wanted to hear. I figure when it rusts out next year I will be out of warranty and on my own. I will be taking this further.

Diesel power,

Your dealer sounds like he is a very reasonable guy, they agreed to fix the door, just not the number one recomended way. Do you think you could meet him in the middle and agree to pay for the extra cost of replacing the door?? Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Moose's Doors are a rotting too!!

Me Too!! How about Body-shop Night at Coffee Night?!! Oo.

lower brake turbo liner

Living in north Idaho, salt has become the norm for road deicing. I had the dealer spray black bedliner "turbo-liner" from the front to the back of the truck. Looks good, took care of all the paint chips, and is extremely durable.

door rot

My door rot didn't show up till this year on my 96. The front fender showed signs as well. I replaced the door, front fender, & the front inner fender. While I was at it the saddlewood was stripped. The bottom from the chrome down was then repainted. I changed the color to a metalic silver. The truck turned out great.

The new interior, complete with custom stiching, was next on the list.

What I'm trying to say is the body shop guy reccomended a light oiling of the seams next to the weep holes to stop the rust from coming back.

Door rot

I just decided to do something about the door rot I had on my 01. The passenger side was the worst and wrapped around the bottom of the door and into the seam. The driver side just had a few bubbles forming. I took it to the body shop of my local 5 star dealer. The looked at it and said they would call back in a week with an answer. I ended up calling them back but they said they would fix it. I dropped my truck off Tue 8 am and picked it Thur 6pm. No questions, paperwork, or payment. As someone said earlier, it is a 100,000 mile or 5 yr warranty that stays with the truck.

On a side note... it appears they replaced the entire door on the passenger side (worst side) and just the skin on the drivers. But it sure looks hella lot better and didnt cost me a dime. Oo. :-laf

I honestly believe that flaps or running boards help keep the rust at bay. My 96 has had running boards on it along with huge mud flaps from an 18wheeler on the back and I have no rust on the doors, rockers, or quater panels. And (unfortunately) I don't wash/wax it very much at all. Salt?? Yeah, it's not just bad for the heart... .
