Utility Box on rear bumper?

Anyone know if these are a good idea?

I'd like to bolt one to the rear 4"x4" tube bumper and was wondering what kind of max weight would be safe, loaded up.

Mine is welded right to the 2 frames.

Hello goober-- I made brackets and a frame out of 1"x1" angle and welded it to the bumper. I took the shiny cover off the bumper. When I finished I cut a piece of it to cover each end of the bumper. Thats all thats visible now. I painted the frame and lined it with some rubber strips before putting in the aluminum truck box. I used a square one(not a crossbed model) and bolted it in with stainless bolts. It turned out very good appearance wise and is great extra storage. Only drawback is losing the spare tire mounting bracket. I got a crankdown from under a pickup to mount it under the trailer but don't have it done yet. For now I just throw it in the back of the truck.

I wonder why trunks4trucks and others who used to make storage bumpers did the Norwegian blue parrot routine (they're just resting). I am trying to get one custom by default to store the tow straps, winch 'stuff', etc which orbits around the cab. With a 6' bed a wannigan box not an option. Seems like locker bumpers would still be in demand!!

I know what you mean about the 6' bed not being able to carry much. Ive been thinking about getting one of those half-height boxes to put at the rear of the bed. Can still hook up the 5'er with one. Just need a place to keep the goodieboxes, & the floor jack.

What kind of weight you carrying in there? Seems that square bumber welded on can carry a good load.

I need it for gas, small outboard motor, generator, spare fuel cause I want the fumes outa the covered box.

and btw, I also got the spare crank under the truck empty because of the type of hitch I got, and will look to mount it under the trailer for the spare - great idea.

A lot of junk

It started out real neat. I found a short version of a 5 gal bucket to hold sewer fittings. I used it for ext. cords, water hose, a few tools, awning tiedowns. Seems like it gets fuller each camping trip. Charcoal, rug, etc. 150 lbs minimum in mine, probably more. But it has been very handy; lockable is nice too. I think you would like it. Sam
