Cummins HMMWV Project

Any one done a V10 to Cummins ? I bought a 1 owner truck with a blown engine with a auto ,I want to put my 1992 Cummins and trans into it a manual any thing you know about the swap I'd appreciate it Thanks

Anything is possible. Before you start the swap, look into the legality of the swap. Usually, it's not legal to put an older engine into a newer truck. If your state requires emmissions testing, or inspections it may not comply with the rules. If such is the case, there maybe legal loopholes that might make this possible, such as re-registering your truck under a different classfication or perhaps exploiting rules regarding alternative fuels (Although you may have to burn biodiesel to satisfy the legal requirements for the swap)
Thats the legal disclaimer. You could probably get away with it, if your state doesn't physically check your truck, doesn't have emmission testing or require inspections, and you don't report it.

Now that, thats out of the way. It is possible to use the 92's engine and transmission. With a mechanical diesel, and a manual transmission, you could probably de-computerize your truck, which means you've made the swap easier by eliminating the need for a computer and the associated harnesses.

You show in your sig that the 92 Dodge is a 4x4, but there is no mention about the V-10 Ram with the blown engine. Is it also a 4wd or is it a 2wd? The reason I ask is either way, you will have to address the transfer case thats bolted to your NV4500. If the V-10 Ram is 2wd, and thats the way you want to keep it, you'll need to drop the t-case and mount a tailhousing, and probably have to rebuild part of the internals to convert it to 2wd. If the V-10 is a 4wd, you'll need to swap transfer cases. The t-case in your '92 has a passenger-side drop. The V-10 will have a driver's-side drop. I can't tell you if the V-10's t-case can be swapped with the '92. But you will need to address this.

There is one other option which will be just as difficult and time consuming as an engine swap. Thats to swap bodies. If you're 92 is rotted out, but the frame is in good shape, you could possibly swap the cabs. It is also a huge undertaking and requires a ton of fabrication, and some parts may need to be modified to be made to fit, but it's an alternative suggestion.

Good Luck
Ed
