Hello all,

I have spoken to Danny about the flood of calls he has been getting for the VA CP3 Level II duration box.

I asked him to put together a brief summary of the questions he has received most often. He put the following artical together.

Enjoy... .

:D

VAN AAKEN DURATION SMART BOX LEVEL II

WHY IS IT BETTER?

We have received numerous calls asking why the Van Aaken duration Smart Box is better than other units on the market. I felt a small article would help to answer most questions and educate the buyer. We test all products prior to offering them for sale because we do not believe anyone just hands on test results!

Van Aaken’s Level II Duration Smart Box

To fully understand how Van Aaken’s unit works a small explanation of the common rail fuel injection system is in order. The common rail fuel injection system is simple to understand. There is a high pressure fuel rail attached to the six injectors so the injectors have continuous high pressure fuel available for injection into the cylinders. The injection cycle and injector opening duration is controlled by the computer. One injection cycle consists of two injection events; one being a pre injection event and one being a main injection event. When the pre injection fuel enters the cylinder it ignites and the main injection fuel is injected into the already burning fuel. This two step injection process helps with noise, emissions, smoke and fuel economy. The key to increasing engine power with this system is to get more fuel into the engine during the injection cycle. We learned early in 2001 on GM’S Duramax common rail system that raising rail pressures too high caused a number of serious problems. Most manufacturers claim their units, for the Cummins, do not raise rail pressures to undesirable levels but we found most units raise the rail pressure to levels we do like to see. High rail pressures can cause erosion or damage in injector body, tip and common rail system.

PRESSURE UNITS:

A pressure unit is basically what it states, it raises rail pressure so more fuel is forced through the injector in the same injection cycle. These units are harder to install having numerous engine connections which could lead to connector problems down the road and they can cause numerous problems due to the increase of rail pressures.

TIMING:

The challenge manufacturer’s face is that the Cummins engine takes its timing reading from both the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. Most other engine manufacturers take the reading from one of the sensors, not both. Taking the readings from both sensors make changing timing very tricky, a simple explanation is picture being on a razor edge and going side to side trying to keep your balance. Most manufacturers who have tried timing units have had many problems including, undesirable high or low timing levels and service lamps coming on. Van Aaken is working on timing but do not have an estimated release date at this time. They do not want to release a box that sets engine codes. Van Aaken’s new duration unit is reprogrammable as long as no hardware changes are required: the new timing addition can be programmed into their unit.

DURATION UNITS:

A duration unit operates by keeping the injector open longer during the injection cycle. With electronics the best method of increasing power is to control the injector opening time without raising rail pressures. Van Aaken is one of the best in the world at controlling common rail injection systems because they have been doing so in Europe for many years and currently they are the only manufacturer offering a duration unit that operates at the ECM level. Controlling injector opening times may sound simple but it is not. Mapping the injection cycle and injector opening duration is very difficult and takes allot of knowledge and skill. Improper duration or cycling will cause the service engine lamp to come on and can place the engine in a “limp home Mode”. The Van Aaken unit is reprogrammable so as new programs come out, and as long as there are no hardware changes the unit can be reprogrammed with the latest. The Van Aaken Duration unit can increase HP up to 138 on a 305 HP engine and about 120 HP on a 600 engine. The reason for the lower HP gains on the 600 engine is there is a high fuel limit and the 600 engine is closer to this limit. The Van Aaken unit is very simple to install with a single connection to the engine mounted computer using a male/female connector. Also supplied is a three position in cabin power level switch.

FUEL ECONOMY:

I am always asked how fuel economy will be effected by a pressure or duration unit. This is very difficult to answer because there are many variables to the fuel economy formula and the driver being the largest. I will explain what I know from hands on experience. In most cases there will be a one to three mile per gallon increase in fuel economy. The increase is due to the additional power. I know this sounds strange but the answer is very simple, if you do not have to accelerate hard to move the truck then less fuel is used. A good example is two identical vehicles, one having a 4 cylinder engine and one having a V6 engine. In most cases the V6 powered vehicle will get better fuel economy and a longer engine life because it is not necessary to beat on the engine to move the vehicle. I find in most cases the increase in fuel economy with the Van Aaken unit is between one to three MPG.

Due to all the above, currently, we only offer the Van Aaken Duration unit for sale. We are also testing stacking the two Van Aaken units (the pressure box and the duration box) for a higher power output.

If you have some questions please call rather than email because in most cases answers generate more questions and I already get over forty emails a day and I would rather be playing with an engine.

Questions

If you have any questions about the VA, I will forward them on from the posts here.

Also, if there is more info you would like to see, post the question and I will have him answer it.

Since the big question that remains to be answered is timing, the question for both Dan and the group is when to buy the VA duration box; now or after the timing paradigm is discovered?

Will a hardware change to the box need to be made to achieve the desired timing result or will it simply be a software change?

A software change is a simple, and hopefully no or low cost, reprogramming of the unit.

What about a hardware change? Is the box's hardware economically upgradeable, or would an entirely new box need to be purchased?

I'm sold on the VA duration box. All that is keeping me from calling in my order today is the necessity of only buying the box once.

Any chance you or Dan can post the installation instructions for the duartion box?

I am really starting to like this new box. Can you tell me what it will do to an 03 SO model. Will hp be greater the that of the 305 model or the new 600? Thank you for the info.

Ya, buy a duration box now and have to pay who knows what to get the timing at an unknown later date, IF no hardware changes are needed. I will wait.

TIMING ON THE VA BOX

JPalese,

If you order the box from Danny at Precision Diesel, he will upgrade the programming for free when it is acomplished.

All he expects is you to pay the shipping both ways.

Install Instructions VA CP3

JPalese,

I don't have the install book in front of me, but here is the sequence. It is very simple and the manual they send has photos of each step.

All you need is a 4mm hex head (allen wrench) and a 1/2" wrench.

They provide the velcro and the wire ties.

1. Remove keys from ignition, place vehicle in neutral, set parking brake.

2. With a 4mm hex head wrench, remove the 60 pin connector from the ecm.

3. Take the supplied “Y” connector and use the same 4mm wrench to place it on the ecm (has a bolt on it). On the other end of the “Y”, attach the stock connector.

4. Run the wire loom up to the fuse box cover (or desired box location).

5. Disconnect the negative side of the battery (1/2 wrench) and connect the negative wire (black, with hoop) to the bolt, retighten.

6. Add the Velcro strips to the back of the box and place on top the fuse box (or desired location.

7. Connect the wire loom to the box (quick connect).

8. Run the switch wire through the firewall and connect it to the box (quick connect, with safety cap).

9. Mount the switch in your cab. Switch is 3 position (off / 50% / 100%). If no switch is installed, the unit will run at 100%.

10. Sit back and enjoy….

:D

EEngel,

Thank you for the info, I am still looking for HP numbers that the box will do on an 03 SO (235hp) model? thanks

That's fair enough.

Does the same hold true if the box hardware were to need changing so the timing function can be implemented?

It is my understanding that the fuel savings achieved by the duration box alone may be doubled when timing changes are added into the equation; at least that seems to have been the VA duration box experinece (once timing was added) on the Duramax version of their box.

Thank you for all the time and work you have put into investigating this and then sharing the info!!

Equipment upgrade

JPalese,

No problem helping out with the info. I just found a product that I like and is safe for my truck, and I wanted to share the info.

I didn't think it would be received as well if I just came on and said the box is great, you have to try it "believe me". I always like to see the reasoning behind things and I figured others do as well.

I spoke to Danny before about the timing issue. He is of the firm belief that the changes will be software only. And if for some reason they are not, he said I would only need to pay for the new harness. He is a good guy and I trust that he will stick to his word.

As for the gas milage, the timing would be a huge perk. There are 5 Duramax box programs right now. The have the timing and duration and the top program is 250HP.

I think we will see the timing pretty quick, they are really set on getting it to work.

What kind of EGT's do you see on the box at 100%? Can you full throttle up through the gears or will that get the engine too hot?

Here is a question I'm wondering. Is anyone running this w/ an auto?

I would think that on a stock auto the 100% setting would be too much for the transmission, but can it handle the 50% mode in stock form?

If you increase duration aren't you in essence changing timing????

What effect does the extended ( later ) fueling and burn have on EGT's ???

Thanks

I would like to know if the 3 position switch on the level 1 box is the same switch and connector on the level 2 so if I did upgrade could I leave my switch/wiring and connector in place?

Maybe I should stack them but that would be sure to blow through my stock transmission:eek:

Stacking

Big Q,

There are a few people stacking the boxes (actually are getting ready to). I know of one that bought both VA boxes and he is going to report shortly.

When I have more information I will post it.

EGT

Shooter,

I get my gauges today, so I will have some numbers for you next week.

Sorry, about the lack of information, but my lack of $ has kept me from the gauges for a week.

I will post temps when I get them.

SO RESULTS

EAman,

Sorry I missed resopnding to your question right away. I have the dyno here for the S. O. and a few others, I am going to try to post it in my readers rig.
