My buddy came by the other day while I was working on my truck and while he was here I noticed it was leaking oil from somewhere on the front of the engine. At first we thought ,and hoped, it was just coming out of the breather but no such luck. The oil was leaking from in between the vacume pump and power steering pump. Since the truck had just turned over 100600 miles we thought we would see if the dealer would repair it under warranty. Well the dealer said NO on the warranty and that to replace the vacume pum would cost $1900 :--) We got a price on a vacume pump from the Cummins dealer which was $600. Since he didn't need the truck right away we pulled the power steering and vacume pumps off to get a better look at them. When we got the vacume pump apart which was no big deal we found it had a bad seal in it that cost a WHOPPING $2. 30. Everything is back together and no more leaks for a lot less then what the dealer wanted. I haven't seen anyone else here that had this problem but I wanted to pass it along just in case.

I would have gone to a few more dealers to see if they would grace that 600 miles. Granted it was technically past the warranty limits, but there are some forgiving dealers out there.

Mine weeps there also but was told by the dealer that it wasn't a part of the engine. They said it would be covered under the 3/36k only. I am at 88k but am fast approaching the 5 year limit. Is this something that should be under warranty?

Vacuum pump

Cstewart,,,good post and information. . I think this will be hot subject in the future when our trucks achieve higher mileage. I was wondering if you could provide the cummins part number for the pump, and as well as the seal? I would like to save this information for future reference. Any pics would also be appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

Chris,

Just wondering where you got the seal from? My vac pump has what the dealer calls seepage==yeah that's right seepage and they said that it's OK (chaps my ass). It's not blowing oil out just a little residue between vac pump and PS res.

Was this on a 24 valve truck? A friend of mine (tdr userid jeebee) had the same problem on his 12 valve and he fixed it using some new seals.

Multiple dealers told me the vacuum pump leak is not covered under the engine warranty... your $1900 was the highest I've seen yet.

Seal is a 28x38x7mm double lipped. Original is Viton material.

An o-ring is in the unit as well, but may not need to be replaced. The o-ring is 55x59x2mm.

I got both parts from Bearings Inc, but try any bearing/seal supplier.

Did mine in December and it has been fine since.

Vacume pump seal PN and supplier

The seal we used was a ISP ( International Seal and Packing) PN# RO1620 NBR. My buddy who is a machinist that rebuilds industrial pumps says that this is a better seal then what came from the factory, the only difference is that this PN # has two lips on it instead of one. He got the seals from what used to be called Berry Bearing here in NW Indiana before it got bought out by Motion industries. The Motion industries PN# is 28X38X7 DN which is the same as the dimensions of the seal which is 28mm ID 38mm OD and 7 MM wide. Out cost from Motion was $2. 30 per. seal. It basically a standard industrial seal that can be purchased through any Industrial supply house that handles this kind of stuff. I didn't check but it can probably be gotten from Grainger which is one place on the Internet I know you can order from but probably not for the same price. As far as the request for pictures no such luck but I did see another post that went into detail about how to go about changing the seal out.
