Just a heads up for everyone in case you have a similar problem.

The horse has been running really rough for the last few weeks and I finally took the time to track it down.

The rough idle led me down the path of valve adjustment(needed it), checking vacuum lines (appeared ok) and fuel injection cleaner (grabbing at straws). The old mare ('96 2500) still wouldn't hold idle.

Since I do most of my driving in town or pulling a 26' travel trailer, I rarely use the cruise control. I took it on the interstate the other day and decided to set the cruise... nothing.

Long story short, I surmised that the vacuum line going to the cruise servo was leaking (brillant deduction, huh). If I had been more thorough in my original "checking" of vacuum lines, I would have discovered that the break in the line was contained in the mesh sock that carries the vacuum line and electrical line to the servo. After a quick repair, she's back in top form.

If I were the only one doing "dumb" things and overlooking the obvious, I would keep this to myself #ad
. Instead, I thought I would take the high road and let someone go to school on me!!

Seems that a lot of folks find leaks in that location. At least it gave you an excuse to take care of some other things.

hey Iron how did you repair the vacuum line?

Has anyone else broke the vacuum line for the hvac that goes across the bottom of the windshield.

Patrick:

The emergency repair was made by sharpening the ends of two golf tees and sticking them into the broken ends of the lines.

I have heard of people repairing hard plastic vacuum lines by using a small piece of rubber line and inserting the broken ends of the hard line into it, thus making a repair sleeve. I'm a little leery of that... I replaced the entire section of line.

Just posted an answer to Simon on a similiar problem. I had the same problem on my son's'94. Line and boots to splice with are available at most auto parts houses on specialty racks. Both my local parts places were out of 1/8th inch line and boots so I got a section of 3/16th line and two 1/8 to 3/16 boots and spliced it in. Works great!

I think this must be happening a lot as our trucks get this age. DeandMe posted the same problem back several months ago. I found it with a search on the forum. This forum has saved me hundreds of dollars in the past few months alone. I LOVE THIS COUNTRY AND THIS WEBSITE!

Question.
What does the vacuume lines have to do with engine idle? If your rough idle stoped when you fixed the line then I'm very curous.
