I'm trying to fix my selector switch for the a. c. vents.

I have vacuum under the hood all the way to where it goes thru the firewall by the heater hoses but I have no vacuum in the cab at any of the actuators. I pulled the glove box and could see the recirculting actuator but nothing else. When I set the switch to recirculate there is no vacuum there.

There is also none at the one by the gas pedal which should have vacuum when it is set to the panel vents. There is also none at the red hose for the defrost actuator. So I think I have no vacuum in the cab.

I had my dash half way out(the easy half) but decided there has to be an easier way. Any one know an easy way to get the dash out? Does anyone know how to get to the line coming from under the hood?

FYI - I do have air blowing out the defroster vents and the floor no matter where I put the switch. Is that what it defaults to with no vacuum?

Not sure on the 97, but on my 2002 on passenger side firewall is a vacuum fitting that cracks or comes apart, its right above PCM area, also I have had the adapter on vacuum pump come off

thanks Rick,

On my 97 I have a rubber elbow there, then the line goes straight thru the fire wall. All is OK there. I have vacuum at that elbow.

Yes, the default is defrost. If you pull the facia off (two screws in the cupholder, two for the ashtray, steering wheel full down) you can access the control panel for the HVAC. Four screws IIRC and you should be able to pull it out far enough to see if you have vacuum there.

FWIW, I had a similar problem a couple months ago. I had vacuum at the firewall but the vents didn't work. My problem was the small rigid line from the pump to the firewall had a crack in it, so there was SOME vacuum at the firewall, but not enough to close the actuators. I cut it completely, slid both ends into a piece of rubber hose and shrink tubing over that.
