Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) vacuum pump gear noise???

last week I posted about hearing gear noise from the engine. Today I put a wooden dowl on the vacuum pump and revved the engine up and down, it sounds like it's coming from the pump. It's leaking oil so I figured I'd just put a new one on an see if that's my problem. I called around, they're over $400 bucks! Before I put a new pump on, has anyone ever had one of these things make noise? I mean with the windows up you can clearly hear this over the engine, even my deaf ol' dad can hear it. Anyone?

A gear type noise could be the Power steering pump, it's right behind the vacuum pump. if the vacuum pump is leaking, no need to replace the whole unit, usually a much cheaper seal kit from cummins does the trick. Definitely check the power steering fluid level, when those things are low they make a lot of racket, especially when you turn the wheel.

Speaking of noises!

I just started hearing a ticking noise coming it sounds like from behind the Tach/dash, it goes away in park and neutral, its very difficult to hear with the hood up and listening from the front of truck, but there is some kind of noise at or below the alternator, but from inside it would seem to much iron in the way to hear this, and if under the truck only loud noise is coming from behind the torqe verter inspection plate. . Its a new sound, thought maybe a rocker arm but doesn't sound like its in the motor. The last work done was Dealer installed new trans gov solenoid, sensor and replaced missing magnet in pan.



Also just replaced updated lift pump. . good thing I had the oem that came with truck, put it back on til warrenteed new lp came. Pump is back by fuel tank. This makes two replacements that have died!
