My 97 Dodge 2500 just developed a bad oil leak at the rear of the vacuum pump. At 98,000 miles, I thought it would be covered under the warranty. However, the dealer checked and tells me it is not covered. They want $900 for a new one just to fix a leak. I know I'm not the first person to have this type of leak. Does anyone know what seals are required to repair this. Dealer apparently does not service the part, just replacement only.

Yup, that is what I did - real easy to replace the seal.

Don't forget to get a new seal for between the gear case and the vacuum pump

You can get that from the stealer #4638531. You can probably get it from the cumming dealer too, but they weren't open when I needed it.

Also make sure that isn't where you are leaking oil from - most my leak was there - not from the vac to p/s pump seal.

Also - makes it a good time to flush your p/s fluid!

When you reinstall the vacuum/power steering pump assembly, be sure to use a gasket sealer on the gasket between the assembly and the gearcase. You won't get a leak-proof seal if you don't.

Hey Jewell

Jewell,

Welcome to the TDR! Actually, you're the one who turned me onto TDR so you've been around while... :D Might want to update your profile with the bombs you have on your truck.

mine would have ben covered under warnty

I had 99,999 miles but was a day over my 5 yr. warranty so the stealers said sorry:--)

I finally had to pull it off to see if there was something I could do with it. I managed to finally locate a seal that would work and fixed the leak. If anyone has this problem, contact me and I will help you through this mess. I figure that I saved at least $850. Doesn't make any sense that the dealer can't get parts.
