Help... . Dodge dealer just replaced my power steering pump under my extended warranty... Immediately started having oil leaks from around the pump... Dealer says it is the O ring between the steering pump and the vacuum pump... Neither DC nor Cummins has this O ring... They state "replace the vacuum pump"... I say BS... ... $600. 00 for a little O ring that apparently should be replaced whenever the steering pump is replaced... . Dealer even took the number from the O ring and has been unable in 48 hours to find this O ring from any seal or bearing people... Also my extended warranty does not list the vacuum pump specifically as being covered... Any suggestions???????? Should the vacuum pump be considered an "engine component"????

If all they did was replace the PS pump that should not have disturbed the O ring. Most likely it is the seal that is supposed to seal around the shaft of the PS pump. They may have damaged it while putting the PS pump back on the Vac. pump adapter.

The seal is a standard part that can be obtained at any bearing/seal distributor - I think it's a 28x38x7, but do a search on vacuum pump and you'll find a lot of info on it.

Like dremelts says, it really sounds more like the seal, not an o-ring. They probably mangled the seal when the p/s shaft was going through... replacing the p/s pump should not have disturbed any of the o-rings.

When I had the vacuum/steering pump assembly out & apart on mine I only recall seeing 2 o-rings... one was where the vacuum pump case can be opened (larger OD)... the other went on the outside of the aluminum sleeve (a smaller OD ring) that the seal sits in. I have the seal and small o-ring sizes at home... got them both from a bearing supply shop that the local Cummins shop sourced for me... PM me if you want the dimensions. I only replaced the seal and it has been trouble free since. Lot of posts exist on the topic, including one on adding a 2nd seal.
