Ive read alot of the old Posts about this problem. Has anyone had this problem recently and what was your experience. My truck is a 2001 4x4 3500 with only 35000 miles. The one dealer Ive talked to said they had recently repaired two trucks at about $1200 each. If they wont cover it under warranty

Ill be doing the $20,replace the O ring myself repair.

Your thoughts would be helpful. Thank You.

Take Care

Hey Mike-

You are under the 36k mile bumper to bumper but are you over the 3 years? Why are they not covering it. You know, even if it is a couple months over, you can get a hold on a district rep and they might do the job out of the goodness of their hearts...

However, my 97 has 170k on it and no leaks, is the vacuum pump leaking bad? You might not be able to rebuild it, its like anything, there might be a problem in the cast and that what turned out to cause the leak... its worth a try though. Keep us posted

MFranz,

I replaced the oil seal in mine yesterday (Sunday) as part of the process of replacing the power steering pump. The vacuum pump was not leaking, but I felt the seal should be replaced anyway since the two pumps were being split apart. Much to my dismay, when I got it all back together, NOW the thing is dripping oil from the seal area! So I get to go back in tomorrow and try again.

It's not a real difficult job, just a bit time consuming. You can actually separate the PS pump from the vac. pump without draining all the PS fluid and disconnecting the lines, leaving the PS pump sitting on the engine mount. A friend of mine has done it and I will attempt that tomorrow. The vacuum pump is real easy to open and service once its out. But, obviously, you still have to do it right or you'll still get a leak!

I don't know how similar/different yours is from my '98, so I hesitate to offer specfics. You might contact Peter at www.fixinrams.com, who sells seal R&R kits for these. He's real knowledgeable and will help.

Good luck,

Jay K.

Go directly to Cummins and get the kit alot cheaper, $15 instead of $40 or $60. Here is some information on the Cummins parts.

Vacuum Pump Rebuild

It should be covered under warranty though unless you've modified your truck... a K&N air filter will wipe out a vacuum pump seal in just minutes :D

Here's a link to R&R'ing your vacuum pump. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89459

One other little tid bit. After rebuilding my pump it still leaked slightly. Pulled it again and noticed a slight groove where the seal rides on the shaft. added a spacer so that the seal dosen't ride in the same place. Worked perfect.

What effect does the air filter have on the vac pmp seal??

I was under the impression that the vac pumped pulled air from the dsh controls and put it into the crankcase?

But I might be wrong

please inlighten me!!

It's meant as a joke based upon Chryslers attempts to void warranties for seamingly unrelated modifications. Hence the reason for the smiley after that statement.

Good point.

Sillier connections have been made.

The dealer once tried to tell me that I ruined my DRL relay when I installed driving lights, as they were not on with the engine running.

When I pointed out to the "tech" that in a 6 speed the DRL will not operate with the park brake set, he released the brake and allowed the truck to roll back into his overhead door, my receiver hitch ball quickly changed the shape of the door.

No damage to the truck, Tech left with a red face, and my truck has not been back to the dealer.

Hmmmm after seeing your pics and seeing what i have seen on my power steering pump im thinking thats exactly whats wrong with mine. . I may just order the part and have the shop near me do it, im mechanically inclined don't get me wrong but i don't have the manuals or possibly all the tools to do the fix... Great pictures which im sure are helpful. .

Is the sealing surface on the nose of the ps pump grooved? If so, clean/polish it w/ emery cloth etc. If not to severe, you might bite the bullet.

It /may/will likely leak again, so go find a reman ps pump. A1 Cardone is good for the money. Then get another seal, and I bet it won't leak this time. Always change the ps pump, unless the groove is un-detectable with your fingernail.

Now if they would only get us a wear sleeve with our handy kit too! Sigh. . we can hope.

mopar vacuum pump seal kit

Mopar recently released a vacuum pump seal kit. It includes pump mount gasket, 1 seal, and 2 o-rings. The Mopar part number is 1-05140342AA. Hope this helps.

The Dodge/Mopar kit is a Cummins kit with a sticker over the Cummins one that says Dodge and for that they raise the price 300%. I bought my kit through the local Dodge dealer quite some time ago because the equally retarded Cummins parts guys told me there was no such kit, so I had to buy it from Dodge so I could get the Cummins part number off of the package.

When I replaced the seals on my Vac/Power steering pump I found this. The power steering pumps must have been spray painted and dried in a position to cause the paint to run. I found paint build up on the area of the power steering pump where if fits inside the Vac pump. This was on the bottom of the pump as it normally installed. Scraped paint off with a razor blade.
