Pump Timing Question...

Since my truck is an early 91, the vacuum pump is the dual diaphragm style unit, not the style pictured in the latest TDR magazine issue. Does anyone have the instructions and/or part numbers for rebuilding this component?

Thanks in advance. . . . .

2 years ago I couldn't find parts locally to do the rebuild myself so I bought a rebuilt unit.

Unfortunately the new unit didn't solve the problem I thought I had at the time.

Sometimes things work out that way.

Simplysmn, his vacuum pump is the earlier version and I don't think fixinrams has anything for the earliest vac pumps.

RWWinslow, The pods are available, remanufactured was the best price and the route I went and I have had zero problems going on over a year now. The gear and bearing section parts are also available, Cummins actually had the best price on these compared to Mopar. I installed a new power steering pump as insurance, these are rebuildable if you chose to go that route. I have the part numbers etc for this repair but I will not be able to post them until tomorrow. Someone else will likely chime in before then.

The rebuild info is in the 89 factory service manual 'diesel supplement'. Although looks like getting service parts is not an option. I don't have the manual here or I'd look for you to see what the procedure is and what is serviceable.

The actual vacuum pump canisters are not servicable, they are available new or remanufactured.

Cummins p/n 3911503

Cardone p/n 64-1300

The vacuum pump housing or "accessory drive support" is servicable, the power steering pump and the vacuum canisters are bolted to it, the whole assy then bolted to the front gear housing. A gasket and four o-rings on the assy. they should be replaced and the rest can be replaced "as needed" according to the manual. The bearing on the eccentric drive shaft can be replaced "as needed". The push rods that pump the vacuum canisters are servicable as well as the bushings they slide in, bushings and push rods replaced "as needed".

Cummins p/n's

gasket 3008400

o-ring seal 3910260 (2 qty)

o-ring seal 3911805

o-ring seal 3912822

If necessary
