I've got a question. My vacuum pump is dripping oil. I'm going to either try to replace the seal or the entire pump if the seal doesn't do the trick. Either way I need some advice on how to do both procedures. I've worked on all kinds of vehicles including my truck I just don't know what all is involved in pulling and replacing the pump.

Thanks,

Wes

There was another thread on this but here is my experience. I tried for several hours to remove the stupid thing and got very little accomplished. I was also told its not rebuildable as far as the seal goes. On the good side Dodge covered it under the 100k warranty and I let them have the grief. BTW I think a new pump is around $700. 00.

Don't make me laugh.

It would be under warranty if I still was. But, my little truck has a little over 300K on it now. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Wes

I had that problem on my 98, heres what to do, get a service manual, that will show you how to take it apart. I replaced the oil seal between the vaccuum pump and ps pump in a matter of about 2 hours alone, the key is to know how it comes apart. Then you have to address finding the right seal. You should be able to find the size by way of a search, and order more than one if you are not sure. Make sure it is vitron, and replace that sucker yourself. Hope this helps, and pm me if you have any more problems.

I just found out today I have the same problem with my truck.

The dealer said 1300 buckaroos. If I gotta do it I gotta do it, I need my truck right now for my business but I hate to spend that kind of money just because of a bad seal.

I'm really short on time and have to make a decision by tomorrow morning. Can anyone share where exactly they got the seal and what the part # is ?

I have also read that sometimes the shaft on the pump is worn and the new seal won't always do the trick. The dealer said I could keep the old pump. I thought maybe I could have it ready for the next time, just rotate the pumps every 50K miles.

Some info for the seal:

CPFF has had the seals in the past:

Another possible seal source from:

March 7, 2003 - Reganis Auto Center has a rear shaft oil seal available for the 24 Valve ISB vacuum pump. Instead of replacing a whole pump, you can get just the seal from them at 308-632-8200 -- email address removed --
