my buddy has a 2000 2500 and the vacuum seems to have gone out at about 120K miles, what is the best solution, replace or rebuild? And where to get the pump or parts? Thanks... ... ... .

If it's not leaking oil and he can stand the abuse he'll get... use a Ford electric vacuum pump (supposed to be what they run w/ the diesel).

Last year they were available from Cummins for ~$605 and NAPA for ~$444. While I had mine out to replace a leaking seal, don't know anything about rebuilding them.

he developed a leak at the vacuum pump then lost power steering and all vacuum, when he took the pump off he said the gear was spinning on the shaft (gear running off the front of the engine that turns the shaft, that runs both pumps) now I'm wondering how to fix that? I have yet to go by and look at it for myself but was wondering is the gear pressed on the shaft?

Don't know if that gear is a press on or not, but if it is the past spinning may prevent a future press fit. Just a thought, but if the gear spinning is the only problem with it... carefully tig weld the gear to the shaft (just don't use so much heat that you melt seals).
