Today I replaced my power steering pump that was howling and groaning and spitting up fluid. Of course, since I had to separate this from the vacuum pump, I decided the best thing to do was replace the oil seal in the vacuum pump. I bought a seal kit from fixinrams.com. A bit pricy, but he supplies the seal, the 2 o-rings, tools (made of PVC) to remove and install the seal and such, a new gasket between the pump and the gear case, and a nice little DVD video to explain the process.

I broke down the pump and installed the o-rings and seal as explained in the instructions and DVD. I was real careful to do it right. I'm not a beginner here, I've done all my own mods, including the gear case rear gasket replacement and upgraded the cam in the process.

Anyway, got it all back together and fired it up. Much to my dismay, I now have a significant oil leak from the seal area! :{ About 2 drips per second at idle. So I'm thinkin' what did I do wrong? I was real careful not to nick the seal with the PS pump shaft putting it back together. I know I got the seal in the right way and seated properly. The only thing I can think of is maybe the o-ring got damaged or slipped out of the groove as I tapped it back into the pump housing.

Tomorrow I will contact Peter and Fixinrams and see if he can overnite another seal and the o-ring on the seal holder and prepare to do it all over again on Tuesday. What a drag.

Anyone experience similar problems?

Thanks,

Jay K.
