2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Vacuum Pump

I believe my vacuum pump is shot. I have no boost for my brakes and the heater & air only blow on the windshield setting. I checked the vacuum on the line from the pump and only have 11.



Are any special tools required to remove this unit and seperate it from the power steering pump? In reading the threads, looks like it is best to remove the power steering pump and vacuum pump as one unit.

I just pulled mine yesterday to replace the seal and yes they have to come out as one unit. While you have the PS pump out clean out the filter in the outlet, I noticed a big difference in the steering and brakeing (I have a hydroboost on my truck).

Check the vacuum from the pump only (just your pump and gauge only) a leaky line can make your pump look bad. If you get a low reading then you do have bad pump. Also check the pump exhaust if it can't exhaust it can't pull a vacuum.

Not sure if you were aware, but there was a recall on the Vacuum Check Valve for 1995 and 1996 model years. There was also a TSB.



Pete at http://www.fixinrams.com/ 877-349-6726 has a DVD on replacing the vacuum pump. I have not seen it, but from what I have read it is pretty good.

Thanks for the information, I did do a recheck and the pump will pull 25". So far I have been unable to isolate the source of the leak. I did isolate the brake booster and my PacBrake actuator and still have the low vacuum. I have also had the TSB on the check valve done.

Check the black hose to the tire side of the ps pump, it also goes up by the master cyl. and if it comes unseated or unhooked, it will do what you state.
