I have a vacuum pump leaking engine oil. It is starting to mess with the starter. Now I'm concerned about the fire some Rammers have had with sticking starters. How do I replace the seal on the pump? Or do I have to buy a new one?

Are you leaking from in between the pump and the timing cover? If so, it's three or four bolts and the whole thing comes out. It's been a while since I last did one, but I remember not liking what I saw and putting some orange RTV in there for good measure.

Can you tell where the oil is coming from?

They can leak at the timing cover. There is a gasket there that can be replaced. Two bolts to remove, very easy.

I've also had one leak around the O-ring that is between the vacuum pump and the adapter plate to the power steering pump.

That o-ring is VERY hard to find. I had several shops tell me that they couldn't help with the o-ring, but would gladly sell me a new vacuum pump for $400 or $600 dollars.

I finally found the o-ring at a hyraulic shop that rebuilds cylinders for $0. 50.

Thanks:

My leak is between the PS pump and the vacuum pump. I thought at first it was the line on the bottom. Replaced the PS pump and saw where it was comming from. Between the two. . If some one could send me an O ring I would pay double or even triple, plus postage, + the package, + the glue, + what ever else.

I got a seal off of CPFF the guy who made the dowell pin jig. You should be able to E-mail him and get both the seal and O-Ring. I have the box the seal came in it is a National Federal-Mogul oil seal size 28x38x7, the bar code #7 24956 08506 4. Hope this helps.

pwr sterring pump

Is the Pwr Sterring pump fairly easy to take off, or do you have to take the air pump and the sterring pump off at he same time to get them apart to replace the sterring pump?

If you want an O-ring, Quad- ring or some other ring or seal, go to your local bearing supply store. Granger, King Bearing are typical.

It might be worth noting that O-rings and the like have a shelf life, depending on what material it is made from. It is buyer beware at your local parts house when you buy O-rings from the handy dandy kits.

You can usually get a higher quality O-ring, Quad- ring at a bearing house. Usually, manufactures use buna (cheaper)material, which has a lower heat tolerance than say a viton or silicon.
